HIGHWAY BUILDING • SALEM, OREGON • 97310
Mr. Allen A. Alsing, Director
Department of Public Works
Ashland City Hall
Ashland, Oregon 97520
Dear Mr. Alsing:
State and City plan and propose to improve the Park Street-
Siskiyou Blvd. Section of the Green Springs Highway, lying within the
corporate limits of the City of Ashland, at some future date which has
not yet been determined. A part of the proposed improvement includes
widening of the present facility to accommodate four lanes of traffic
and will require the acquisition of additional right-of-way. It has
been determined that a parcel of property needed lies within the Mt. Vi"
Cemetery and contains 28 occupied graves. Past experience, indicates that
lengthy negotiations are normally required to effect the relocation of
graves. .
The City of Ashland has expressed a willingness to begin con-
tacting relatives of persons buried within the proposed right-of-way
in an attempt to obtain permission for relocation of the graves and to
effect their removal.
Recognizing the mutual benefits which will accrue to the resi-
dents of State and City by reason of this proposed project, State and
City.hereby pledge complete cooperation, each with the other, in order
to accomplish effectively the following.
Attached hereto, marked Exhibit A, and by this reference made
a part hereof., is a sketch map showing, colored in red, the approximate
location of the proposed right-of-way boundary in relation to the occupied
gravesites.,
City shall proceed with the necessary negotiations in an effort
to effect the relocation of the occupied graves. Upon completion of the
relocation work, City shall submit to State an itemized statement of the
actual total cost incurred-by-reason-of-said relocation work.
State shall, upon receipt from City.of an itemized statement
of such costs, reimburse City for 75 per cent of the actual costs
incurred by City in relocating certain graves within the Mt. View
Cemetery, a portion of which lies within the boundaries of the pro=
posed right-of-way. However, State's participation shall not exceed
''Six Thousand Two Hundred ($6,200) Dollars. - i
Please give careful consideration to the provisions contained
in this letter and, if found to be acceptable to you, present it to the
City Council with your recommendation of approval. Request the Council
to adopt an ordinance or resolution, as the case may be, authorizing
the Mayor and Recorder to enter into such an agreement. Forward three
signed copies of the agreement and resolution to this office for pre-
sentation to the Highway Commission. Following approval and certifica-
tion by the Highway Commission Secretary, a fully executed copy will be
returned for the City's permanent records.
Thank you for your interest and cooperation in this matter. If
we can be of any assistance, do not hesitate to call 378-6514.
Very truly yours,
County and City Engineer
