My name is -Kevin Deveny/Louise Shawkat Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you today. We, at Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN), are planning a two day regional summit on October 13th and 14th titled "Our Critical Climate" that will examine Trends, Impacts and Solutions. The Summit will be held at the Inn at the Commons in Medford. We are reaching out to elected officials, public agencies, and individuals who want to learn more about our changing climate and its growing impacts throughout our Rogue Basin and who want to minimize those impacts. s Conference Goal Our goal is to increase public awareness of current conditions and trends, share success stories from the Rogue Basin and around the state and stimulate additional actions addressing concerns. Conference Program On October 13th experts will describe climate trends and consequences such L-~ as: r,L Temperature, • Snow pack, • Water availability and drought, • Ecological impacts, • Forests threats - from temperature, drought, and insect infestation, • Human health risk increases, j' • Outdoor recreation threats, • Agricultural. j On October 14th we will address solutions underway and possible. ~ I t' tation Our goal is to attract several hundred attendees who will become more familiar with current trends, problems, and current solutions. On our final afternoon, the attendees will then start to develop further solutions to minimize local impacts. You can help! We are asking you to consider joining us and many others at this summit to contribute your concerns and expertise and to participate in developing solutions that will benefit our region t `,'c=ur support and endorsements We are not asking for funds for sponsorships (though that would be4AL welcome). Input Since we want this to be as inclusive and valuable as possible, we welcome any input you have on the proposed program and approach. Summary Climate trends are increasingly apparent and problematic. Although broad' _ based global and national action is necessary, we also need to address regional issues. This is an opportunity to think and act collectively to enhance the quality of life in our region.
