Dear Mayor and Members of the City Council,
RE: Proposed Landscape Designs - Pioneer & Lithia Way
I heartily endorse the Tree Commission's report on the trees at this corner. There are 2 experienced
arborists on the commission that, along with the rest of the committee, have given thoughtful and
environmentally-sensitive advice. The trees should be protected, and where needed, mitigation measures
taken to extend the life of these valuable assets to our community
Having read through the minutes of the Beautification Committee, it is clear that their intent was to
beautify these corners by adding irrigation and replacing the shrubs. Nowhere in their minutes do they
talk about removing any trees. That concept was introduced later.
But in addition to the issue of the trees, I have other concerns about the plans and their impact on the
streetscape. Below are photos and comments that illustrate my concerns:

The large Maple that is shown on the plans to be removed is beautiful and helps to soften a rather plain
building. Its roots may have lifted the sidewalk at an expansion joint, but the damage may also have
been caused by normal settlement. Using permeable paving in the new sidewalk would allow the roots to

If the tree is removed, a boarded-up window is exposed to the street - not attractive.

The plans call for a concrete seating wall along the sidewalk, replacing the low retaining wall

One possible solution for seating would be a bench next to the wall where the person is standing
in this photo. It might be possible that the building owner would agree to shorten the walk to
accommodate a comfortable and out-of-the-way seating area.

These are the shrubs that are proposed to replace the large Maple tree behind the seat wall -
a great loss to greening the downtown. The corner needs more green and less concrete.

The plans specify a railing across the front of Erie nuilding next to the higher sidewalk and on

This is another view of the railing. It is very utilitarian and plain, adding nothing to the streetscape
and making the corner appear even more drab. A decorative railing would add beauty and character
to the corner.

i he roots of the Maple on Fioneer are wrapped around the trunk. It appears that if a tree grate is
added to the tree well, the roots would have to be removed and likely kill the tree. Permeable paving
would allow the tree roots to expand safely.

The Red Maple in question is one of four along Pioneer. They should all be dealt with effectively,
not just the tree at the corner.
One more concern is the plan for 3 rows of intermittent fencing across the front of the parking lot and
interior median. Allowing entries and exits at intervals along Lithia Way would encourage jaywalking, and
3 rows of fencing are a redundant and unnecessary expense.
Thank you for your consideration of all aspects of this design. I am sure the Beautification Committee's
intention was to make this corner more attractive, not to destroy its beauty. With your patience and
concern, that can be accomplished.
Yours truly,
