PROCLAMATION \
! J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture in 1872 that a "
ji special day be set aside for the planting of trees.
This holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of more than
a million trees in Nebraska.
Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world.
■ Trees can reduce the erosion of topsoil by wind and water, reduce heating and
_ cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and
provide a habitat for wildlife.
Trees increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas,
beautify our community; and are a source of joy and spiritual renewal for many.
■ Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper, wood, fuel, and countless other
wood products.
_ ■ Ashland has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day I t
j:. Foundation for 31 years and desires to continue its tree-planting ways. €
1 NOW, THEREFORE, the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of Ashland, hereby ~proclaims April 3 to 9, 2016 as
c ! ARBOR WEED IN ASHLAND r
and urges all citizens to support efforts to care for our trees and woodlands and to
j support our City's community forestry program. I further urge all citizens to plant r
trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well.-being of present and future
generations. '
