wanted to extend kudos to Mark for a great outline of a healthy Integrated Utility in this great
Transition. I'm glad he is at the helm, and am really excited to see how we, as a city, can develop
the specifics for its implementation.
I'm speaking tonight to share my professional opinion on Ashland's present electrical energy
sources, and what effect our utility decisions might have on the NWPP grid. ,
Here's a quick primer on our current sources of electricity
Ashland, along with much of the Pacific NW, has its electricity regulated and balanced daily by
the NWPP.
The electrons in our NWPP grid are a mix of ALL of sources.
Typically the closer to the source, the ~1-~ reater their intensity, but the grid is always in a state of
flux. ( f f 0 ~ 1
Here are the sources per the NW Council

A fundamental point I would make here is that every electron Ashland produces renewably, will
displaces one coming from a coal or other generation type. Electrons produced here might allow
more BPA electrons to be pushed east (to Cooperatives that want to buy more but can't because
BPA is fully sold) further reducing the need for coal-fired electricity which has an impact on us as
well- its really all one big system.
