PROCLAMATION
• Hundreds of thousands of underage girls and boys living in the United States,
and vastly greater numbers abroad, suffer in silence under the intolerable yoke
of modern slavery.
. • In 2016 over 239 calls and 49 cases of potential human trafficking were
reported in Oregon. ;
• The defense of human rights is an essential part of our national and local -
identity.
• We recognize the people, organizations, and government entities that are
working to combat child trafficking.
• The President of the United States has declared January each year as National
Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, so we also add our support
to this important initiative.
`\V ! NOW THEREFORE, the City Council and Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of }
Ashland, hereby proclaim February 2017 as:
Child Trafficking Awareness Month
and hereby urge all citizens to recognize the vital role they can play in ending }
' modern slavery and to observe this month with appropriate programs and F
activities.
