WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS,
increased public investment in transit services provides the potential
to create jobs and enhance business prosperity; and
public transportation is vital to the quality of life and economic well-
being of the citizens of the Rogue Valley; and
commuters, school children, senior citizens, people with disabilities,
and those who are transportation disadvantaged, use public
transportation to gain access to jobs, schools, medical facilities, and
other fundamental services; and
WHEREAS,
the nation, our communities, and our citizens face the risks to health
and environment that are brought on by automobile exhaust
emissions; and
WHEREAS,
traffic congestion, which wastes productive time, can be alleviated
through the increased availability and use of public transportation
and other forms of high-occupancy, shared-ride services.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of Ashland, Oregon, call
upon all citizens to examine their personal travel choices, to commute via transit
or shared-ride services, and to become more active in education and advocacy
efforts to promote the vital role of public transit services in the Rogue Valley.

City's pioneers and their descendants; and
these fine examples of 19th and early 20th century buildings
contribute to an appreciation of our heritage; and
WHEREAS,
preservation of these ties with our history helps avoid a sameness
that in some communities makes for a feeling of rootlessness and
lack of sense of place; and
WHEREAS,
National Historic Preservation Week provides an opportunity to
recognize the value of Ashland's historic resources and encourages
their preservation for future generations.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do
hereby proclaim the week of May 9 - 15, 1999 as
"NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK"
and call upon the people of Ashland to recognize and participate in this
observance.
