REGULAR MEETING
MINUTES
August 20, 2021
I. CALL TO ORDER
Chair Jennifer Longshore called the meeting to order at 8:42 a.m. via Zoom.

III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Public Arts Commission regular meeting of July 16, 2021
Commissioner Smith/Preskenis m/s to approve the minutes as presented. Vote: ALL AYES. Motion passed.
IV. PUBLIC FORUM
Peter Finkle/Ashland/Explained the Southern Oregon Historical magazine asked him to write an article about public
art in southern Oregon. He shared an email exchange with the chair of the Medford Arts Commission.
Sandy Friend/Ashland/Was interested in updates on the HUB sculpture and the medallions.

VI. OTHER BUSINESS
Say Their Names Coalition
Chair Longshore provided an update. The Say Their Names Coalition was working with Parks and Recreation on a
location. Once the location was determined, they would form the selection panel. The Coalition was interested in
having a Public Arts Commissioner meet with them prior to the selection panel moving forward. Commissioner Smith
asked if they were not going to use Railroad Park for the location. Chair Longshore explained they were working with

Parks and Recreation to determine a site. Commissioner Preskenis thought the artists were designing pieces for
certain areas.
VII. PAC WORKPLAN
a. Hub Artwork
Staff liaison Aaron Anderson explained the artist received her first payment. Chair Longshore added they were
having trouble hiring an engineer due to the pandemic but were able to find someone. They continued to work with
Chinese language contacts to finalize the layout of the Chinese Characters on the spike. Once details were finalized,
it would come to the Commission for final approval.
b. AHS Mural
Mr. Anderson explained the Ashland High School mural proposal was approved by the City Council. Next steps
included the property owner signing an agreement, paying a deposit and the principal signing a letter that Mr.
Anderson was expecting in two weeks or less.
VIII. PROJECT UPDATES
a. Masterworks Plaques
Mr. Anderson talked to Jennifer Andrews the week before and read from an email she sent regarding the castings.
They were estimating shipping in six to eight weeks. Mr. Anderson would work with the Public Works Department
regarding installation.
IX. GOALS AND ACTION ITEMS
a. Power of Public Art – Service Club Presentations – Jennifer
Chair Longshore reached out to several local clubs and booked presentations with three organizations. Mr.
Anderson would provide a contact for the Ashland Library. Chair Longshore would do the presentations.
Commissioner Smith provided additional contacts.
b. Promoting Art in Ashland and Connecting with Community – Status update
Commissioner Preskenis was ready to guide First Friday art tours, however, the recent surge of the Delta Variant
was preventing the tours from happening.
c. Public Art List – (creation of a new platform) – Status update
Commissioner Bloom explained the project had not moved forward very much. Mr. Anderson further explained some
obstacles inhibiting the project’s progress as well.
The Commission and staff discussed Phase 2 of the Hub art project. They went on to discuss the Ashland High
School mural. Mr. Anderson explained there would be an inspection when the site for prepped for painting.
Commissioner Smith suggested the project team do a time-lapse of the painting. Mr. Anderson would contact Chair
Longshore once the paperwork was signed. Chair Longshore was interested in stopping by during the process. Mr.
Anderson commented any members of the Commission could stop by the project providing they did not form a
quorum.
Chair Longshore explained agendas and minutes for the Public Arts Commission were stored on the City’s website.
