A.Airport Day Planning: Subcommittee discusses preparation activities for airport day and what items provide the greatest benefit to airport appreciation day.. Also in attendance is
Lew Nash who worked with Hendrickson last year on the planning of airport appreciation day in addition to the science works aviation week held onsite last summer. Chip Lindsey the Director
of Science Works also in attendance to assist with planning and to see what Science Works can offer.
Members discuss what has worked and not worked previously. Brim states having as many aircraft and static displays as possible is important for the viewing public. Food is also important
as the pancake breakfast and bbq lunch the past few times have been successful. Chip states that food trucks could be used onsite as well. Staff to track down contact information of
person responsible for pancake breakfast last year and forward to Moen so she can make contact.
Science works has a couple aviation demonstrations and experiments that can be used onsite.
Everyone agrees that activities to keep the kids entertained is important. Moen mentions face painting or miniature airplanes they can play with and or things to build. Another huge
hit is the airplane and helicopter rides, but their needs to be activities and visuals to fill in time gaps while waiting for rides. Wolske mentions the antique biplane operator from
last year stated he would come back if asked. Butler asks if they have ever had sky divers put on a show and members state no. Butler also states the Rogue Valley Flying Club will be
in attendance. Brim can check with Erickson Air Crane to see if they could bring over a helicopter for the day. Staff to reserve the banner connection on Main St. for the week prior
to Airport Day. A new one will need to be made to replace the old one which has deteriorated beyond repair.
Nash mentions having speakers and an MC is important to inform people of what is going on and where to go. It would also be nice to have speakers setup to the AWOS frequency so the general
public can hear pilots talk over the radio when landing and taking off from the site. Butler states having an air traffic controller give a presentation might be beneficial and the
FAA has a public affairs department that might be able to send a representative. Butler to contact the FAA. Butler also informs members of smoke jumper museum in Selma and if they have
anything mobile it would be a welcome addition. Butler to contact the museum and discuss ability to display items at Airport Day. Staff to contact Larry Graves in Grants Pass a give
him a heads up about airport day so he might be able to pass on the word around the Grants Pass and Illinois Valley Airports in order to generate more fly in activity.
Staff mentions Ashland Fire and Rescue and they might be able to provide a piece of equipment onsite for viewing. Brim states previously the Department of Forestry and Jackson County
Sheriffs have been involved. Moen to ask Corey Falls about getting involved and Fleury to contact Ashland Fire and Rescue
Wolske mentions drones, but with the current FAA regulations they might present a problem. Also there is a sign on the entrance road that states no radio control aircraft.
Members agree and safety onsite during the event is of utmost importance and the CAP or police cadets should be used as marshals for people and vehicular parking.
At the next meeting members will check in on progress and continue to work on planning.
