Regular Meeting
June 19, 2015

Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m.
Minutes of the May 15 meeting were approved with corrections.
Watershed Art
Pam Marsh and Sue Springer provided answers to questions raised at the Public Art
Commission meeting in May. They have met with the Public Works Department and
confirmed the location on the Bandersnatch Trail as suitable. Public Works will assist in
installing the piece. Marsh also recommends ordering a sign that matches the current signage
style used in Lithia Park.
Garrington notes the Watershed Art Group is the type of group the PAC wants to work with
and congratulated the group on what they have accomplished. She also provided information
on the NEA Our Town grant that may be helpful for the group as they move forward.
Springer reported they have applied for another Haines grant and will work with the PAC to
develop the Call for Artists. Garrington noted that the PAC is interested in professional
artists.
Garrington moved to approve acceptance of the Pacific Fisher sculpture into the City’s public
art collection, second by Clark. Approved.
Light for Peace Wall
Jean Bakewell is asking the PAC to approve lighting the Peace Wall. She presented a
lighting designer concept that the PAC did not favor but suggested some alternatives.
Bakewell will research other ideas and return in the future. Seltzer will speak with the
Planning Department on the required process to install lighting on a public right of way.
Gateway

1) General discussion on the layout of the room for the artists presentations. The group
agreed that a single presentation table be available and the artists will present one by
one. Notecards will be provided for attendees to write questions which will be
answered at the end of the presentations. Presentations will occur in the Gresham
Room at the Ashland Public Library on Thursday, September 10 at noon and again at
5:00.
2) The PAC agreed to the following people as first choice for the selection panel and
assigned PAC members to contact each individual:

Jurors are expected to attend both public presentations and then to meet the following
morning to select the finalist.
3) Publicize the Presentations
Seltzer will include the information on the City’s website and ask the Chamber to
post the information. Seltzer will ask the Mayor to make an announcement at the
Council meeting prior to the presentation date. Newman will ask the Ashland Gallery
Association to help advertise the event and Clark will ask the Ashland Art Center to
help get the word out. Merchant will follow up with the Daily Tidings on possibly
including a series of articles related to the Gateway process and to highlight the
public presentations.
Utility Box
Clark updated the group on the proposed utility box project. The group decided to do a pilot
test by inviting Brandon Goldman to take photos to be used to wrap the utility box at the top
of the Calle staircase. The PAC will select one of the photographs and submit the request to
the City Council to approve the test project. Clark will check with Stewart Media on the
digital photo requirements and whether or not the image can be removed. It was decided to
do a pilot Garrington commented the design and concept is colorful and will attract people to
the location.
Dedication of Fall Splendor
The PAC decided to dedicate Fall Splendor at 6:00 on the first Friday in August. Seltzer will
notify the artist and post the information on the City’s website and issue a news release to the

media. Newman will alert the AGA of the event and Bussell will arrange for plastic cups and
sparkling cider so attendees can toast the artist and the work. Seltzer will send an email
inviting the Council and Park Commission to the event.
