Calle Guanajuato Sculpture
Artist Annette Julien presented her sculpture Fall Splendor to the commission. Specifically
she addressed the groups concerns about the durability of the piece. She explained her
inspiration is based on the “chinese lantern plant” which grows a pod that encompasses the
flower and eventually the berry which turn bright orange in the fall. The leaves are heart
shaped and turn a coppery color in the fall.
Julien explained her use of materials: steel for the leaves, pods and stem and glass for the
bright orange berry inside the pod. She explained she can reinforce the leaves at the
connection to the stem and explained how steel is stronger once it is shaped. Bussell
concurred.
The PAC was pleased with the presentation and felt confident in the artist and her ability to
implement the sculpture and to mitigate the potential for vandalism. It was noted the
sculpture needs approval from the Parks Commission and the City Council.
Seltzer will communicate with Julien on the time line.
NEA Grant update
Seltzer explained the NEA grant application will be accessible on March 6 with a deadline of
March 20 and has been drafting the narrative and the budget to include in the grant
application. She requested PAC members contact the Ashland Art Center and the Gallery
Association to be “organizational partners” who can provide informational collateral for the
project. Organizational partners are required by the NEA. They want to see that other
entities are participating in the process specifically helping to inform the community about
the project. Seltzer also noted that the Chamber of Commerce could be listed as an
“organizational partner” as well as the Selection Panel. Garrington will contact the Gallery
Association and Friend will contact the Ashland Art Center. Seltzer also requested brief bios
from each of the PAC members.
Hepford noted she has not received a confirmation from ArtPlace to move forward with the
PAC grant request. She expects to hear in the next week.
Progress on
PAC members have completed their list of notifications about the Gateway RFQ. As new
contacts or opportunities are identified Bussell will add them to the list. To date,
approximately 140 individual artist, art organizations, art listing entities and more have been
contact and send the information about the Gateway project. The deadline for submittals is
March 31, 2014.
Update on Grants
Hepford and Clark worked on the NEA grant application but discovered they could not move
forward without more information from the City.
Seltzer has submitted the preliminary screening application for the NEA Art Works grant. If
approved, the City will be notified that it can proceed and submit grant application. City
policy requires staff to seek approval from the City Council prior to submitting grants.
Seltzer will seek Council approval at their Jan 21 meeting.
The PAC is also waiting to hear on whether or not they can proceed with a grant application
to ArtPlace. The preliminary screening letter of inquiry was submitted in December.
Hepford expects to hear from ArtPlace in February.
Progress on Inventory of Public Art/Locations for Public Art.
This item was postponed to a future agenda.
Meeting adjourned at 10:00.
