Selection Panel Utility Boxes
September 08, 2014
4:30 p.m.
Attendance
Bent Thompson, Hanna Sohl, Deborah Steerling, Matt Small, Kathy Carter
Margaret Garrington, chair Pubic Art Commission and Ann Seltzer, staff liaison.
Welcome
Garrington called the meeting to order, welcomed the group and thanked property owner
Brent Thompson for sponsoring the painting of the three boxes and thanked the others for
being willing to participate. She explained that Ashland Municipal Code requires a selection
panel, independent from the Public Art Commission to select the art work.
Overview
Letters were sent to all addresses within 200 feet of the utility box on A Street and Oak Street
and the two boxes on Pioneer Street and A Street inviting people to serve on the Selection
Panel for the artwork. In addition, PAC members encouraged art enthusiast to contact the
staff liaison if they were interested in serving. The above members responded they wanted to
serve.
Process
The panel reviewed the submissions and used a score sheet to evaluate the work based on
overall strength of the design, artistic excellence and innovation, appropriateness for the
location. The group then discussed each submission and reached consensus on which designs
to select.
Selection
As a group, they selected Ann DiSalvo’s design for the two boxes on Pioneer Street and A
Street. And they selected the design submitted by Yelena Joy for the box on Oak Street.
Next step
Seltzer will contact the artists and execute a contact for each.
Meeting adjourned at 5:15 p.m.
