HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-03-20 Public Arts_MIN Minutes Public Art Commission March 20, 2009 Regular Meeting Attendance: Commissioners: Bussell, Pugh, Edson, Markell, Wynkoop, Seltzer (staff liaison) Absent: Longshore, Wilkerson, Voisin (Council liaison) None Guest: Denise Baxter, Executive Director Ashland Artisan Gallery and Art Center Chair Markell called meeting to order at 8:20 a.m. Citizen Issues: Baxter provided an update on the fund raising campaign for the Ashland Artisan Gallery and Art Center to be located in the old Provost Building. Wynkoop commented on need to clean up the Plaza kiosk. Seltzer will forward the request to the appropriate department to be added to the list of Downtown “Spruce Up” for this spring. Pugh mentioned that the proposed new sign code will be reviewed by the Council in early April, of particular interest in the language allowing 3D signs. Minutes approved for February Edson/Pugh Utility Boxes Edson and Markell provided an update on the UB project. The group reviewed the draft Call for Artist and will forward any comments, changes to Seltzer. The Call for Artist will be posted in early April. The project will include 7 boxes and cost approximately $500 per box to prep the boxes for painting. Once the entries are selected the PAC will meet with the artist to provide additional information. Edson is hoping to secure two high school students per box as assistants, as volunteers the students can complete their community service hours. Markell mentioned that we may need to secure umbrellas or tarps to create shade over the boxes during the painting period. Calle Guanajuato Staircase Four submissions were received. The PAC reviewed the submissions and discussed the Selection Process. A total of eight people have agreed to sit on the selection panel. Bussell will oversee the process on April 2 at 4:00 p.m. Review Timeline/assignments The group reviewed the timeline for upcoming projects and made necessary adjustments. The timeline is fluid and changes depending on how the projects are moving forward. AAC Exit 14 and 19 Longshore and Seltzer have been attending the AAC meetings with ODOT. Seltzer gave a brief update on the process and provided the group with design concepts being discussed by the committee. The public opne house for the projects will likely be sometime in May. th Guanajuato 40 anniversary Seltzer provided a brief update on the activities and planning for the Guanajuato Sister City celebration to occur in Ashland April 11  April 19.
