Attendees: Risa Buck, Ross Finney,Jim Hartman, Shelley Lotz,Jim McGinnis and David Runkel were present. Russ Chapman was absent due to illness. Stuart Corns was not present. City Council Liaison and Chair: Kate Jackson Staff representative: Robbin Pearce INTRODUCTION OF NEW COMMISSION MEMBER David Runkel was introduced to the Commission and he spoke briefly about his background. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Chairperson Finney asked for approval of the minutes for April 22, 2009. Commissioner Buck moved to approve the minutes of April 2Z 2009 and Commissioner McGinnis seconded the motion. Voice Vote:All Ayes.The motion passed with a unanimous vote. PUBLIC FORUM No speakers present. ANNOUNCEMENTS Next Meeting-July 22, 2009 NEW TIME 6-8PM Commissioner McGinnis announced Transition Town Ashland meets every first Thursday at Peace House at 7pm, and every third Thursday at the Library at 7pm. Commissioner Buck spoke about an interactive table to beset up for July 4th, like the one that was set up at Earth Day, and working with community organizations to help the Master Recyclers educate the public about Clear Streams that will be located in various spots on the 4th. OLD BUSINESS Green Business Report Robbin Pearce read last months report highlighting: the web, video about sustainability for public TV, 6 applications on her desk, certificates, and the Mayor presenting the businesses with certificates. This month's report includes: 8 applications on her desk, requesting the Mayor present the certificates, City of San Carlo's Green Business program including a video, creating a similar web page for Ashland in the future. NEW BUSINESS Air Quality Commissioner Buck wondered if the Commission would support creating a reminder notice about burning leaves/plastics to help educate the public as part of community outreach. Commissioner Lotz wondered if we could create an educational link/web page under the Conservation Commission home page on the City of Ashland's web page. Sub-Committee Formation Chairperson Finney hoped to discuss the goals and which members would be interested in what areas, to form pre- subcommittees who would then come back to the next meeting and define what the sub-committee's function would be in terms of supporting that goal and what they hoped to acomplish. The members reviewed the goals for 2009 and stated their interest area. Goals: 1. Significant Commission Involvement in the Sustainability/Strategic Plan proposed for development by the City. Support and help the development of a Major Green Building Initiative for the City. Interested members: Commissioners Lotz;Runke CouncilorJackson (Commissioner Buck for Green Business Program) 3. Encourage increased amounts of Local Energy Production from Renewable Resources and Energy Efficiency. Interested members: Commissioners Hartman;McGinnis;Finney CouncilorJackson 4. Help improve Water Quality and Storm Runoff&also encourage efficiency in water usage by pursuing at a minimum the use of Grey Water and Water Catchment. Interested members: Commissioners Buck;Runkel 5. Significant commission involvement by supporting and helping with climate change initiatives within the City. Interested members: Commissioners McGinnis;Hartman ASH LAND SANITARY& RECYCLING UPDATE http://www.ashiandsanitary.com/ Commissioner Buck updated the Commission for the month. City approved a 7.7% rate increase. The Recycling Center days of operation will be open Tuesday through Saturday and now closed Sunday and Monday. The worm bins are all sold, Conservation Commission owes $60.00 for reimbursement. Hazardous Waste Collection:Ashland and Talent represented 17% of total participant, 85,950 pounds of Hazardous waste was collected. Discount day received 5 tons more. Latex Paint collected 35 yards worth of paint. The Bottlemania Event brainstorming ideas will be posted on websites in the future. Master Recyclers 2nd training that began in March is going well. ClearMax-Discussion about Inserts and printing costs. AOR Conference is June 11-14 in Redmond (Eagle Crest Resort). Commissioner Buck will be facilitating a section on Rural recycling. COMMISSION ITEMS NOT ON AGENDA Commissioner McGinnis brought up the problem on single serve bottle water for the 4th of July and the Commissioner supported the water wagon idea from last year.
