INTRODUCTIONS Present: Ron Bolstad, Kathy Kane, Pete Norvell, Ron Parker, Mike Morris, Chief John Karns, Firewise Communities Coordinator Ali True, Administrative Assistant Kimberley Summers. Absent: Kelly Gustafson, Jim Hardt, and Eric Olson III.APPROVAL OF MINUTES First meeting will skip this step IV. PUBLIC FORUM V. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE AGENDA VI. BUSINESS A. History of Firewise Program Ali True, The Firewise Program is a National program. There are 9 Firewise Communities in Oregon, most are located in Central Oregon. Oak Knoll Meadows is the first community in Ashland, south of where the fire was last year. City of Ashland is a little more difficult to make Firewise because of many non-associated residents in urban environment. Trying to create social networks that Firewise Community program depends on is not realistic,but providing opportunities for Firewise events such as annual clean-up or disposal day is a realistic Firewise goal for City. The program is a partnership with the Oregon Department of Forestry, represented by Brian Ballou. B. Orientation and vision to Firewise Communities in Ashland A. Vision: Firewise day or event to encourage community results. Starting with the HOA's that we have, start expanding to immediate neighbors, provide regular events/services on an annual basis. Firewise day for your neighborhood, ways to get the word out have Firewise educational events, fuel removal education, prevention and awareness. About saving homes and protecting your investment. B. One idea is the five step recognition program, working towards recognition on a city-wide scale. 1. Form a Firewise board or commission helping to move Ashland towards recognition 2. Commission accepts report 3. Action Plan made by Commission 4. Spend $2 per capita 5. Submit application C. Discussion of Meeting Protocol a. A quick Reference Guide to Oregon's Public Meetings Law. D. Discussion of a Commission chairperson appointment and representatives of each neighborhood. a. Once we get the whole group together would like to appoint a Chairperson. We can consider Neighborhood representation as an approach for the Commission E. Update on current Firewise Communities by Neighborhood a) Briscoe 3 /Strawberry Lane, Lithia Creek Estates, Blossom View Estates. b) Grove 1 /Mountain Meadows c) Lincoln 3 /Merrill Circle, Quail Haven, Roca Canyon d) Terra 2/Canyon Park, Pinecrest Terrace Neighborhood, CERT NERTZ Group e) Oak Knoll 1 /Oak Knoll Meadows E. Discussion of Commissioner's requests for meeting content a. Training Materials, provided from Ali b. Action Plan- Firewise days and ideas, Juniper round up, landscape fire resistant class. c. What seems to be working in neighborhood dynamics what is effective and what is working in the community. VII. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS It was suggested to do a vegetation class quartly available to the community. A way to get the word out will be discussed at the next meeting. Over the next month think about the outreach and how to get the message out in the community. School contest, etc. VIII. REVIEW AND SET COMMISSION CALENDAR/NEXT MEETING A.
