ASHLAND FIRE WISE COMMISSION

I. CALL TO ORDER: 12:00 PM
II. INTRODUCTIONS
Present: Eric Olson,Kathy Kane, Ron Parker, Mike Morris, Kelly Gustafson, Ron Bolstad, Jim Hardt,
Pete Norvell Absent:None , Firewise Communities Coordinator Ali True
III.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: October 19th, 2011 meeting minutes were approved.
IV. PUBLIC FORUM
V. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE AGENDA
Eric Olson would like to bring to our attention the possibility to talk to the council about landscape
planning. Will address that during Commissioner Comments.
VI. BUSINESS
A. Annual report for 2011 —will be presented at February's meeting.
B. Update on current Firewise Communities by Neighborhood, * indicates new Firewise
Communities forming in 2012!
Renewal process for 2012. Ali will be coordinating program renewal with the existing
Firewise Communities (7 total) in Ashland. Similar funding is available to the communities
as last year to complete action plan items.
a) Briscoe*-New community is Thornton Way. Will be working towards
recognition. No home owners association. 10-15 homes
b) Grove*- Mt. Meadows started at the end of 2011 with assessment
c) Lincoln-Nothing new
d) Terra*- Canyon Park association is getting ready to join
e) Oak Knoll-will be participating next year
a) City-wide projects: landscaping sign, education project, Firewise week,Nursery
partnerships, Parks Building
0 Money has been procured for starting some of these projects; a landscaping
sign meeting has been scheduled with ODF on Friday. Kathy Kane, Kelly
Gustafson and Jim Hardt would like to work on the landscaping sign.
0 Education project,poster contest 1 St and 2nd grade Kathy Kane volunteered to
help with coordination, Ron Parker would be willing to talk to the nature
center getting them involved. Ron Bolstad will talk with the boy scouts troop
112 about getting involved with the poster contest.
0 Firewise Week Ron Bolstad volunteered to head the project. Coordination
with wildfire prevention week in the spring, Ron Parker volunteered to help
with the Clean Up Day effort.
0 4th of July Parade, 8863 would be available; poster contest winner could ride
on the engine. Commission's ideas and participation are essential. Jim Hardt
suggested a booth at the end of the parade.
0 Community tours .Eric Olson will start up again in the spring or summer.
• Nursery partnership meeting have been scheduled, Chief Karns and Ali True
will be meeting with Valley View Nursery. Educating the contractors and
local Nursery's Rays, Valley View, Grange Co-Op and Home Depot. Ali
True will talk with Kelly Gustafson more about how to work together with
contractors.
• Parks department is trying to implement all the suggestion in the Firewise
assessment on their own based on the recommendations that was made on the
grant submission.
D. Upcoming events
1. Firewise Community Assessments in Canyon Park and Thornton Way,
January/February, 2012
2. Fire Resistant Landscaping class, late February, 2012
3. Firewise week, May 6-12, 2012
E. 10 Minute Training: 2012 Firewise grants
Please review the hand outs. 2012 ODF grant received from the fuels committee to reimburse the
homeowners/property owners who removed debris on their property and around their home within 30
feet of the house. The grant has been approved but has not yet been disbursed to the City.
Firewise communities grant available for the Firewise neighborhoods can be used to address areas of
concern in common grounds and private lots. Both grants are from ARRA funds.
VII. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Eric Olson would like to bring to our attention the possibility of talking to the city council about
landscape planning in the wildfire interface. Advisory role to council for wildfire hazard issues will
be provided in future meeting by Ali True.

A. Next Regularly Scheduled Meetings: February 15th, 2012 and March 21th, 2012
