CALL TO ORDER II. INTRODUCTIONS Present:,Kathy Kane, Ron Parker, Mike Morris, Ron Bolstad,Jim Hardt, Pete Norvell, Firewise Communities Coordinator Ali True. Absent: Eric Olson,Kelly Gustafson III.APPROVAL OF MINUTES: February 15th, 2012 meeting Approved 12:04 pm IV. PUBLIC FORUM V. ADJUSTMENTS TO THE AGENDA VI. BUSINESS A. Presentation by James Johnstone, SOU student, Firewise 5K. Absent, will try to reschedule for next month B. Update on Firewise Projectsand Volunteer SignUp a) Poster Contest—Commissioner Kane �► This week going to class rooms in the District to present the poster contest to the 4th graders each student received an 11 x 17 poster board paper. Bellview Walker and Helman. 3 schools will be participating. April 61h all posters will be collected; on April 18th the group will vote from the top 10 posters. Ali True commented that this project would not be happing without all of Kathy Kane's hard work and dedication"Thank-You". b) Clean-Up Day—Commissioner Parker �► Sunday, May 6th from 9-4 Lincoln school drop off location, volunteers will be arranged to manage the drop boxes. Port-a potty has been scheduled to be delivered at the drop off location. Volunteers will not be unloading vehicles. Please review the flyer that was handed out for more details. April 2nd media and advertisements will be published. Volunteers 1. Kathleen Kane 2 hours anytime 2. Pete Norvell 9 -11 3. Jim Hardt 12-4 4. Ron Bostad 9-11 to TBD 5. Mike Morris 2 hours to 4 hours TBD c) Firewise Week—Commissioner Bolstad �► Promoting"Protect your home, protect your community" Firewise week. Working with the Library to help promote education on Firewise. The banner across Main Street is not available this year. We could possibly have a sign made and hung at the entrance into Ashland. City Source news letter March 15th deadline was met for April. Coordinating with the poster contest and Clean-Up Day. Press release will be done by Ali True, Media plan will be organized with the local TV stations; Sneak Peak is a news paper option for advertising. Thank You to Ron Bolstad and Ron Parker for their efforts coordinating the Clean-Up Day and Firewise Week efforts. d) Firewise classes—Ali �► Nursery workshop was done; the education was given to 6 employees from various local nurseries. We talked about labeling or stickers for fire resistant plants. Professional Landscape Contractor class was completed with 25 people and a home owner class for next winter/spring will be scheduled and coordinated through Parks and Rec. Dept,based on high interest from residents in this program. e) Landscaping sign status—Ali �► Sample was provided to the group of the new sign. Ali will distribute the signs to home owners who achieve Firewise standards through the grant program. f) Community updates—Ali �► All our current Firewise communities are working towards renewing from now until June. Green Meadows way up towards Tolman Creek, Mountain Ranch has shown interest. Thornton Way, Canyon Park, and Mountain Meadows are on the way to being certified in 2012. C. Upcoming events 1. Firewise Poster Contest Judging: April Firewise Commission meeting 2. Firewise week events, May 5-12, 2012 D. Discussion of Firewise Neighborhood proposed re-organization and map names: Oak Knoll, Above/Below the Boulevard, and then West of Lithia, Central, and East of SOU. • Due to limitations on text it was suggested to use street names for identification purposes. Ron Bolstad, Pete Norwell,made a motion to approve the re-organization and map names. • Above the Boulevard will be separated into 3 zones: o Ashland Mine to Granite o Glenview to Walker o Walker to Tolman Creek • Oak Knoll and Below the Boulevard are the other 2 zones • Motion to approve was made and seconded. These will be the new Firewise Neighborhood zones for mapping purposes. GIS will be asked to revise the neighborhood map and then it will be updated on website. VII. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS • National How-To Firewise Spring newsletter that comes out four times a year featured Ashland as community example. • Ron Bolstad commented on the educational meetings that are being done by Ali True to the local contractors, nurseries and home owners are really beneficial and making a difference in our community. VIII. REVIEW AND SET COMMISSION CALENDAR/NEXT MEETING A.
