i. Plant List Subcommittee
• Tracy received feedback from a local nursery. The next step is to
finalize the page so that we can hand it out at Farmers Market. Can
we put a link to more information on the website? Links to more
extensive lists?Who is going to be the final word about distances?
The icon approach allows the reader to dig deeper. The objective of
the pamphlet is a primer that can lead them to something that will be
more definitive. Look back at the Waterwise website and OSU
Extension. Doug mentioned that this list is a great guideline for
landowners who just want to be planted.
• Green: Close to the house
• Yellow: Next layer of the house
• Red: Far away from the house or none at all.
• Add a horizontal divider, in the Green section that says:
Close to the House, Far from the house.
• One rain drop is drought tolerant, two rain drops is
moderate drought tolerant
• We need to look at the science of the 5 feet from CPAW.
Alison and Chris will call CPAW is get more data from
them.
• What is CEAP telling people about plants/shading?
Working with being sure that we are aware what the
• Regulations about bark being sprayed within 5 feet of a
house. We need to begin a discussion about bringing
together the rules/concerns of different commissions.
• Tracy will send an email to Brandon Goldman about rock
mulch and lot coverage.
ii. Wildfire Mitigation Ordinance
• Things are moving forward.
iii. Smoke Marketing
• Smoke Marketing pamphlet is out on Facebook as well as a new 30
second video about prescribed mild fire in Ashland. Text alerts are
the latest avenue for prescribed burning communication. Alison will
email a link to these resources to the Commissioners. Ashland Fire &
Rescue is also working with Asante and Jackson County Public to
create a health and wellness resource pamphlet. Outreach and input
will also be sent to Ashland School District, and SOU.
iv. Wildfire Task Force(Smoke, Evac/Com)
• Smoke: See above
• Evac/Com: Chris, Alison and Tim need to meet to synthesize the
lessons learned from the first meeting with Tighe and Chief Shepherd
about Evacuation Protocols.
v. Community Wildfire Protection Plan Subcommittee
• Brian Hendrix, our Weed Abatement Coordinator is performing home
assessments using Intterra to complete part of our risk assessment
piece. We are also getting guidance from CPAW on the risk
assessment. Alison, Tim and Vicky are meeting monthly and moving
forward on Chapters 1-4.
vi. Farmer's Market
• We have a larger table this year so our display is bigger and more
impactful. Positive feedback from the table so far this year. People
are really happy to see a table there and Doug is going every two
weeks weather permitted.
vii.Firewise Update
• Firewise Clean Up Day
Over 100 carloads on a cold day last weekend. Certain audience
needs this opportunity and we should consider other outreach to get to
a diverse audience who have differing needs. Alison will present info
from the FireFree program at the next meeting.
• Firewise Expo
Friday was well attended with over 800 students from 6 schools who
came to Fire District 3 in White City. There was no live burning on
Friday. Saturday for the public was less attended(56 people), and live
fire was used to demonstrate how juniper can ignite a structure. Live
fire displays were videotaped to produce PSA's. Alison will be
working on a smaller scale next year to bring an event to Ashland.
Need to discuss how to get this content into Ashland Schools, because
none of them attended this event on Friday.
viii. AFR Update
• Helicopter is still running, with over 143 log trucks were shipped last
week. This will hopefully be wrapped up at the beginning of June.
