SERJ Sub-Committee Meeting
February 1, 2022
Social Equity Racial Justice Sub-Committee Notes
Tuesday, February 1, 2022
Present: Cheri Elson, Julie Gillis, Precious Yamaguchi
• Goal: To raise awareness in community about SERJ and its work in the City
• Important to make sure full Commission is comfortable with our suggestions and feel it is the
best way to further goal
• Pick 2 events each year for SERJ to participate in a leadership role
ü Pride Parade (October)
Ø Historically has parade and event in Lithia Park – Cheri will reach out to Gina DuQuenne
(in her capacity with SO Pride) to discuss and report back
ü Indigenous People’s Day (October)
Ø Might be better for future years so not doing two events in October
ü July 4th
Ø This is a problematic holiday and needs to be discussed with full Commission to see if we
would want to participate
ü Juneteenth (June)
Ø This seemed like a really good one to be involved in – needs to research how
• Capture events on a monthly basis where SERJ Commissioners were present
ü Presence does not need to be primarily as a SERJ Commissioner
ü Allows Commission to track how many events/year we participated in at some level
Ø Furthers goal of raising awareness
ü Could Commissioner be announced at event as way of letting community know we are there?
• Other ways to be a larger presence in the community
ü JPR interviews (Precious is gathering more information on this)
ü Be nimble in ability to respond to community
Ø Responding to Letters to the Editor that may not be inclusive
ü Post quarterly reports of SERJ Commissioner actions/appearances on SERJ website
• How can Commissioners to get to know each other better and build community in a COVID
world
ü Commissioners record themselves doing something like cooking a special dish and talk about
why it’s special – then share with other Commissioners
ü Park pot-luck in Spring where Commissioners can bring special dish and share why
