A Proclamation in Honor of Farmworkers
WHEREAS,an estimated 72,000 farmworkers are employed across Oregon and make
essential contributions to our agricultural economy; and
WHEREAS,an estimated 2.6 million farmworkers are employed across our nation driving a
thriving agricultural industry that provides over$1.5 trillion in economic benefit annually; and
WHEREAS,farmworkers are the critical first step in the food supply system that feeds 341
million Americans and many millions more beyond our borders; and
WHEREAS,farmworkers are essential to the economic and cultural fabric of our communities,
yet their contributions often go unseen; and
WHEREAS,farmworkers provide highly skilled,and often challenging labor that is often taken
for granted; and
WHEREAS,the City of Ashland is proud to honor the legacy and continued perseverance of
the farm workers movement and its ongoing fight against oppression and discrimination and
for dignity,equality,and fair working conditions.
NOW,THEREFORE, I,Tonya Graham, Mayor of the City of Ashland,Oregon,on behalf of the City
Council, do hereby make this proclamation in support of farmworkers in our community and
across our nation, and call on the people of Ashland to take the time learn about the
farmworkers movement and find ways to support our local farmworkers.
