WHEREAS, pedestrians have the fight of way over vehicles; and
WHEREAS, Oregon law requires drivers to stop for pedestrians in marked or
unmarked crosswalks; and
WHEREAS, every intersection is a crosswalk whether painted or not; and
children under the age of nine cannot judge distance, motion or speed;
may be inattentive or distracted; and may think that when they see a
car, the driver sees the,n; and
WHEREAS,
WHEREAS, the elderly or disabled tnay have poor vision, hearing, or other
limitations; and
WHEREAS, the City is committed to encourage walking and all citizens are
entitled to safe use of the public roads.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Golden, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do
hereby proclaim the week of June 9 through June 16, 1996, as
CROSSWALK AWARENESS WEEK
in the City of Ashland, Oregon, and I call upon all motorists to contribute to
improving the safety of pedestrians and crosswalks by being aware of them and
graciously yielding the right of way.
