Disability Employment Awareness Month WHEREAS, Congress has declared OCtober, 1995, as Disability Employment Awareness Month in the United States, and WHEREAS, Governor Kitzhaber has done likewise in the State of Oregon, and WHEREAS, Americans with disabilities have a disproportionately high rate of unemployment, and WHEREAS, studies have shown that a two-thirds majority of adult Americans with disabilities are able and want to work, and WHEREAS, architectural, communication and attitudinal barriers prevent people with disabilities from working, and WHEREAS, government budgets are drained by benefits paid to persons with disabilities who want to work and cannot find jobs. NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Golden, Mayor of the City of Ashland, HEREBY proclaim October, 1995 as DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH in the city of Ashland. And, I ask all citizens of Ashland to join me in encouraging and promoting the employment of people with disabilities, removing barriers which prevent them from fully participating in all aspects of daily living and encouraging independence for all individuals with disabilities.
