WHEREAS, the vitality of our nation depends on how safe we keep our
homes, neighborhoods, and communities, because crime and fear
diminish the quality of life for all;
WHEREAS, people of all ages must be made aware of what they can do
to prevent themselves, their families, neighborhoods, and workplaces
from being harmed by violence, drugs, and other crime;
WHEREAS, the personal injury, financial loss, and community
deterioration resulting from crime are intolerable and need to be
addressed by the whole community;
WHEREAS, effective cri~ne prevention programs excel because of
partnerships among law enforcement, other government agencies, civic
groups, schools and individuals as they help to rebuild a sense of
communal responsibility and shared pride; and
WHEREAS, crime prevention initiatives are more than self-protection
and security, but must promote positive alternatives to delinquency and
drugs among young people and emphasize the power of youth to better
communities.
THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Golden, Mayor, do hereby proclaim
October 1995 as
CRIME PREVENTION MONTH IN ASHLAND
and urge all citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions,
and businesses to increase their participation in our community's
prevention efforts and thereby promote good citizenship.
