WHEREAS, iounded in 1904, the American Lung Association is involved in
sponsoring programs and research on all aspects of the lung and
a decade ago.
NOW THEREFORE, I, L. Gordon Medaris, Mayor of the City of Ashland, in tribute
to the dedicated efforts of the ~erican Lung Association and the Oregon Lung
~sociation in support of Clean Air Week, do hereby designate the week of
~y 2-8 as:
"CL~ AIR WEEK IN AS~D"
and urge everyone in this co~unity to join the local Lung Association in
its fight for clear air during Clean Air Week and the year 'ro~d.
Clean Air Week is the annual event which focuses attention on the
importance of achieving healthy air. Cosponsored by the American
Lung Association...The Christmas Seal People...in conjunction with
State and Territorial Air Pollution Program Administrators (STAPPA)
and the Association of Local Air Pollution Control Officials
(ALAPCO), Clean Air Week 1983 emphasizes citizens working with state
and local government to achieve clean air goals. A shift in enfor-
cement responsibilities from federal to state and local governments
is expected to be included in the provisions of the new Clean Air
Act, now pending in Congress; and
the job is tough: Almost 45 million Americans may be exposed to
levels of air pollution that exceed federal standards, the American
Lung Association estimates. The health costs of air pollution also
are staggering. Over $40 billion in health costs each year -
including worker absenteeism and decreased productivity - can be
