PRESERVATION IS HOUSING AMERICA is the theme for Preservation Week,
cosponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the
Ashland Historic Commission.
preservation and rehabilitation have contributed to the economic
and social well being of our cities, towns and communities by in-
creasing the tax bases, decreasing crime, and creating solid
investment opportunities in historic districts and neighborhoods;
and
preservation increases the value of the public's investment in his-
toric public and private buildings, streets, sidewalks, and parks,
and affords basic shelter requirements to vast numbers of low and
moderate income households; and
pre-1939 housing represents approximately 32 percent of the country'
housing stock and 40 percent of all rental housing; and
hundreds of thousands of these structures are eligible for invest-
ment tax credit treatment, thereby providing jobs and housing and
preservation makes good financial sense through the rehabilitation
NOW THEREFORE, I, L. Gordon Medaris, Mayor of the City of Ashland,
hereby proclaim May 8 - 14, 1983, as
"HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK"

and call upon the people of the City of Ashland to recognize and participate
