WHEREAS, there is a need to increase public awareness of the dangers of
driving while drunk or drugged; and
WHEREAS,
over 25,000 Americans lose their lives and 650,000 more are
crippled or suffer serious injuries each year in alcohol related
accidents; and
WHEREAS,
existing laws need to be enforced and tougher laws enacted in
order to end this needless slaughter of citizens on our roads
and highways; and
WHEREAS, Society needs to look upon drunk and drugged driving as a crime
and give support and rights to the victims of this crime,
I, L. Gordon Medaris, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do hereby proclaim
the week of December 12-18, 1982 as:
"NATIONAL DRUNK AND DRUGGED DRIVING AWARENESS WEEK"
and do hereby urge all citizens of Ashland to give cognizance to this
problem, which is becoming a prevalent part of daily life and to accept
the responsibility by doing whatever is necessary to keep persons known
to be drinking excessively or in a drugged condition from operating a
vehicle whereby they will be jeopardizing the lives or physical well-being
of others and/or themselves.
