'^~{ER.EAS, June 14 marks the 2Olst anniversary of the birth Of the
American flag, adopted by the Continental Congress in 1777 as the new flag
of the United States of America, and
VK~EREAS, in those 201 years the Stars and Stripes has flc~m above Mount
Everest# at the North Pole, on battlefields around the world, and today is
firmly implanted on the moon, and
~EREAS, the American flag flies over governmental offices and school
buildings ard over military cemetaries marking the final resting place for
many Americans who have given up their lives in defense of thet Flag and
WHt~EA5, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks conducted the first
Flag Day observaf~e in 1908 and
~rERFAS, by 1911 it became mandatory for all Elks Lodges throughout the
Nation to observe Flag Day am
%~HEREAS, over the years these ceremonies became so popular and
widespread that in 1949 Con~ress, by joint resolution, designated June 14
as a day of National Observance and the resolution was signed into law by
President Harry S. Truman, himself an Elk, and
%]HEREAS, members of the Ashland Elks Lodge will again honor the Flag
through appropriate ceremonies on June 11.
N~.~ T}HER~FORE BE IT RESOLVe) THAT the Ashland City Council hereby
declares June 11 through june 17 Ashland Elks Flag ~ek.
FUR~IIER, the Ashland City Council by this proelmnation urges all residents
of Ashland to Join with the Elks in honoring the American Flag by flying the
Stars and Stripes and by participating in ceremonies paying tribute to the Flag.
