MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING
ASHLAND CITY COUNCIL
May 29, 1973
A special meeting in council chambers was called to order
by Mayor Fries at 7:30 P.M. on the above date. Allen, C~nklin,
McCannon, Prickett and Roble were present. Soderberg arrived
at 7:45.
Mayor Fries announced that the meeting was called by the three
councilmen on the Indiana Street Committee in order to hear
requests of S.O.C students regarding closure of Indiana Street.
The mayor read letters from Dorothy Specht, 1320 Prospect
and Bud Wilkerson, 785 Palmer Rd. who objected to the closure
of Indiana.
Eonklin explained the history of attempts for perimeter roads
South of the campus and the closure of streets through the
campus and signalization of the Boulevard going back to 1965
and the BEATS plan, and explained the traffic problems that
would be created if Indiana were closed before there is a
perimeter road. He said the council had asked the college to
give the perimeter road a first priority, and Dr. Sours had
cooperated in his requests to Board, but it had been deleted
from the S.O.C. budget.
May Duhaime and Brian Delashmutt, speaking for the students,
stressed that their favorite suggestion was for three stop
signs at Indiana and Madrone and larger crosswalks at an
angle near the interection.
Dr. Butler, 630 Leonard St., objected to bumps on Indiana
Street.
Dr. J.- Bartlett, 1313 Woodland Drive,
of the traffic uses the one-way street
suggested the campus close that street.
suggested that much
into the campus, and
John Connors, 772
as great downtown

Indiana, said the pedestrian probl&m'!is'.
as near the college, and could see no
consideration at S.O.C.
After considerable discussion of various means of protecting
pedestrian, Prickett moved to install three stop signs at the
corner of Indiana and Madrone Streets with the crosswalks to
remain where they are now located. Conklin objected to a stop
sign for traffic Koing up the hill because of slippery con-
ditions. On question from Roble on location of stop signs,
Prickett said the two on Indiana should be set by the present
crosswalks at the interection, and the other one facing to the
West on Madrone. Allen commented on the juvenile attitude
of college students who wanted special consideration for their
convenience rather than safety, and pointed out similar
situations at elementary schools where children walk to the
corners and use existing crosswalks.
