Le~,/s~ Robe~fts, Ward, the City of Ashland met in adjourned session at Mayor Neill presided. Councilmen Baker, Cottle, and Whitham were present. Park Board Members Findlay, Fries, Reinholdt, Eberhart, Scrlptor, and Park Superintendent Correy were in attendance. Counczlman Lewis proposed a motion that the City of Ashland purchase the Oregon Museum oi Natural History from Mr. Jim Hamby for offered price of $5,500.00, provzded that Mr. Edd Rountree would promise to assume leadership ~.n forming a non-profit ownership corporation for ~.~e operation of sa~d museum. Mr~ Rountree heartily agreed to this request. Mr. Fries, Park Board Member, stated that he felt this arrangement was most agreeable with the Board, and that no problem was anticipated in regards to future Lease of said museum. Dr, Elmo Stevenson, President of Southern Oregon College, expressed h~s appreciation and enthusiasm of the above action and stated that the Botany and B~ology Departments of the College would cooperate greatly to this endeavor. Councilman Cottle brought up the matter of the unmovability of the present "Habitats" ~n the Museum and that space was available in present building for only four more of same. No specifmc solution was arrived at, but it was felt that some action could be resolved in the future. Foilowin~ further comments from those present, Councilman Lewis requested, ~he suggestion of City Attorney Skerry, that three amendments be made to his original motion which are as follows: (1) Lease arrangements of the non-profit corporation be subject to Park Board approval; (2) Understanding that any building expansion of said museum be under Durisdiction of Park Board; (3) that payment of $5,500.00 be made from ELectric Reserve Fund. Motion was seconded by Cottle. On Roll Call, carried unanimously. Councilman Whitham stated that he felt that the way to sell anything to the public was not by unfair criticism but that closer cooperation between the Council, Park Board, and Press in regard to facts presented was most necessary and desirable. Mr. Jim Hamby stated that he wished to make a public apology to the Council, Park Board and all concerned regarding his misunderstanding of the reasons and opinions of said parties. at City Council Minutes September 27, 1966 City Administrator Ayre was authorized to negotiate method of payment of $5,500.00 to Mr. Hamby. There being no further business, moved by Lewis, seconded by Whitham, that meeting adjourn subject to the call of the Mayor. Carried Unanimous ly. W. E. BARTELT City Recorder
