WHEREAS, one in every eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer
dmfng her lifetime; and
WHEREAS, approximately 40 Oregon women are diagnosed with breast cancer each
week and 10 Oregon women die of breast cancer each week; and
WHEREAS, breast cancer is an issue which affects our families and our communities;
and
WHEREAS,
the five-year survival rate for early stage breast cancer (which has not
spread to other tissues) has risen from 78 percent in the 1940s to
approximately 96 percent in 1999; and
WHEREAS,
early detection is the best defense for saving women's lives and early
detection is most effective when it includes breast self-exam, clinical breast
exam and mammography; and
WHEREAS,
new partnerships are being developed among local health departments,
health care providers, communities and voluntary organizations to assure
that early detection education and screening services are available to all
Oregon women.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do hereby
proclaim October 2000 to be
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
in Ashland and encourage all citizens to join in this observance.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the crime of domestic violence violates an individual's privacy and
dignity, security and humanity, through the systematic use of physical, emotional,
sexual, psychological and economic control and/or use, including abuse to children
and the elderly; and
WHEREAS, the problems of domestic violence are not confined to any group or
groups of people, but cut across all economic, racial and societal barriers, and are
supported by societal indifference; and
WHEREAS, the impact of domestic violence is wide ranging, directly affecting
individuals and society as a whole, here in this community, as well as throughout
the United States and the world; and
WHEREAS, it is the survivors themselves who have been in the forefront of
efforts to bring peace and equality to the home.
NOW, THEREFORE, in recognition of the important work done by domestic
violence programs, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of Ashland, do hereby proclaim
the month of October, 2000, to be
NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
and urge all citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs
to work toward improving victim safety and holding perpetrators of domestic
abuse accountable for their actions against individual victims and our society as a
whole.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, smoke and poisonous gases are the leading cause of fatalities during fire
emergencies, and can cause death in advance of actual flames; and,
WHEREAS, underestimating the potential of fire, and the time it takes to escape a fire
emergency, can place our loved ones at risk of death and injury; and,
WHEREAS, developing and practicing a home fire escape plan at least twice a year is
critical to preparing for a real fire emergency; and,
WHEREAS, a complete home escape plan includes having working smoke alarms,
everyone in the household knowing two ways out of each room, a family meeting place
outside and knowing how to contact the fire department; and,
WHEREAS, Ashland Fire & Rescue encourages every family to develop a home fire
escape plan and to practice it regularly; and
WHEREAS, Ashland Fire & Rescue joins with the citizens of Ashland in a commitment
to the safety of life and property from the devastating effects of fire; and,
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do hereby
proclaim the week of October 8-14, 2000, as National Fire Prevention Week. This week
commemorates the great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 persons, left
100,000 homeless and destroyed more than 17,400 buildings.
I call upon the people of Ashland to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work
and school, and to plan and practice their home family fire escape plans as the Year 2000
Fire Prevention Week Theme suggests:
"FIRE DRILLS: THE GREAT ESCAPE!"
