Re; Tho new Shakosoeare Festival Theater
Dear Mayor Shaw and Members of the Council:
As an Ashland architect I am extremely supportive of the proposed Oregon Shakespeare Festi-
val's new theater which will replace the Black Swan.
Considering all of the requirements and constraints involved with the project design, such as the
site, the preservation of Carpenter Hall, conformance with surrounding buildings, parking, etc.,
the architect, working in harmony with the OSF and sensitivity to community feelings and needs,
has done an outstanding job of satisfying these requirements in designing the new facility.
The external spaces created by the new courtyard and well defined waikways connecting the
new structure with the existing "bricks" outside the Allen Pavilion and the Angus Bowmer Thea-
ter will be an attractive asset, not only to the OSF but to the neighborhood and the City. The
new parking structure shared by the Festival and City will be an additional well designed asset
that addresses the parking problem extremely well.
Holistically, the project is a big plus by providing a contemporary structure that blends with older
historic structures in the downtown area. It does not copy but mimics shape and mass, as it
should.
It is with regret that I am unable to attend this Council meeting to address these issues parson-
ally but offer my written words to encourage you to consider all of the positive aspects of this
project in addition to the overwhelming support it has received from the citizens of Ashland.
Sincerely,
Theodore L. Mularz, F.A.I.A.
