HomeMy WebLinkAbout0501 Gun Turn in DayProclamation of Gun Turn-In Day Whereas 49% of Oregon homes have guns, exceeding the national rate of 35% of homes, and Whereas 22,000 Oregon children live in homes where firearms are kept loaded and unlocked, and Whereas a gun in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a family member or friend than it is to be used in self-defense, and Whereas the risk of suicide is 5 times greater in homes with guns and the risk increases to nine times greater for teenagers, and Whereas guns are quickly overtaking auto accidents as the leading cause of death of adolescents ages 18-24 years, and Whereas the voluntary, no-questions-asked gun turn-in day in Medford, Oregon, in 2000 provided the opportunity for Rogue Valley residents to exchange 315 guns for gift certificates, With the goal of building safe and healthy communities free from gun violence, the mayor and the Ashland City Council do hereby proclaim May 12, 2001, as Gun Turn-In Day for the Rogue Valley to be held in Ashland at the Ashland Christian Fellowship Church Parking Lot from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Dated this Ist day of May, 2001.
