Whereas,
brain tumors are unique among all cancers in that they attack that
part of our body that is the seat of our spiritual, intellectual, physical,
emotional, and cognitive abilities...our sense of self; and'
Whereas, brain tumors are one of the leading causes of cancer death and
disability among Oregonians, especially children; and
Whereas,
from 1996 to 1998 (the most recent statistical period available) 68.0
Oregonians were diagnosed with malignant brain tumors, and 591
Orego~ans died of malignant brain-tumors, and
Whereas, the incidence of brain tumors .is inexplicably increasing; and
Whereas, brain tumors are among the:most difficult of all canoers to treat
successfully; and
Whereas, accelerated research is desperately needed to defeat this uniquely
deadly and debilitating disease; and
Whereas, Oregon possesses the medical research facilities and intellectual
resources to become a leader in brain tumor research; and
Whereas,
brain tumor awareness and research has and will continue to lead to
promising discoveries that contribute-to the overall fight against many
other types of cancers, thereby benefitting all Oregonians,
Now, Therefore, the mayor and the Ashland City Council do hereby proclaim
May 6-12, 2001, to be:
BRAIN,TUMOR AWARENESS WEEK
in Ashland and encourage all citizens to join in this observance.
