Meeting called to order at 7:10 p.m. Members Present: John McClendon (Chair) Donn Todt (Minutes) Bryan Nelson (Advisory Member) Robbin Pearce (Staff) Approval of Minutes - No quorum. Bryan had one correction. Guests: Mike Star, Natural Systems Landscaping (97-019) and Karen Brenton Old Business: A. TID Trees - No new report. B. Trees on Highway 66 - The fated trees have been removed and suitable replacement trees planted. The irrigation and root barriers have been installed. C. Arbor Week - Attending members reviewed the agenda of scheduled events. New Business: A. Planning Actions for Site Review: 1. Planning Action 97-025, Applegate Way, Gregory Moffitt - Commission advised applicant the Q. robur was a good choice, however, they do hold old foliage until about April which could be a maintenance consideration. Also noted that C. betulus was a good choice for tree lawn. 2. Planning Action 97-029, 280 Maple Way, Ashland Community Hospital - Applicant did not submit an acceptable landscape plan. 3. Planning Action 97-019, 1055 & 1085 Benson Way, Jerry Toney - Commission suggests applicant replace Sourwood and Styrax on west side with Raywood Ash. Also recommended adding two Crimson King Maples or other larger stature trees at the entrance. To protect the existing Oak, the ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES APRIL 3, 1997 VI. wall should be moved away from the trunk and closer to the drip line. Suggested changing some shrub varieties to hardier types. 4. Planning Action 97-031, 201 S Mountain Av, Ashland School District - Members felt that the overall landscape plan was good. Advised applicant that the Ginkgo trees are very brittle and slow growing and felt that 2" caliper trees would work better. B. Collaboration with the Conservation Commission - Robbin reports that the Conservation Commission would like to work with the Tree Commission on a couple of future projects. Attending commissioners gave full support to the joint venture. Meeting adjourned. 2
