v - Cascade Frog: Throughout Jac Co.- Marshes, ponds, low flow
streams. Up to 6550 ft.
C - Spotted Frog: No confirmed reports, but potentially present
along [E) edge Jac Co.
C - Painted Turtle: Present, but exotic.
C - Western Pond Turtle: Throughout Jac Co. Found in all types of
water bodies up to 6000 ft. Uses
terrestrial habitat to nest and overwinter
up to 1/2 mile from water.
v - Sharp Tailed Snake: Lower Table Rock, Bear Cr. (from [N] Medford
to [S] Ashland. Talus slopes, moist habitats
habitats often near edge of forests.

v - Southern Torrent Salamander:
(previously Olympic
salamander now split
into 4 species)
No records, but high possibility of
presence. Rocky seeps, gravel with
water percolating through, splash
zones. Between 1200 - 4000 ft.
C2 / V - Del Norte Salamander:
No records, but high possibility of
presence. Rubble, talus, outcrops Etc.
usually within forested areas to 4000 ft.
V - Siskiyou Mountain Salamander:
Applegate Valley. Talus, rocky
often [N] facing slopes.
Copper, [S] of Applegate Lake, Mt. Ashland,
Neil Cr. Eagle Point area. High elevation clear
rocky streams.
V - Tailed Frog:
v - Northern Leopard Frog:
Big Butte Cr., [W] of Butte Falls.
Ponds, wet meadows, riparian. Slow
moving or still water with lots of
associated vegetation.
P - Black Salamander:
[S] of Ashland, Ashland Cr., Applegate
Valley. Moist logs or talus slopes.
P - California Mt. King Snake:
Throughout Jac Co. oak or pine
forests often mixed with
madrone, and on chaparral
slopes up to 9000 ft.
P - Common King Snake: Trail, Rogue River (town), Table Rocks,
Ashland, Eagle Point. River valleys,
riparian areas up to 5400 ft.
U - Red-legged Frog: [N] of line drawn from Squaw Lakes to
Union Cr. Wetlands, ponds, lakes, wooded areas
near streams to 2830 ft.
V - Foothill Yellow-legged Frog:
Throughout Jac Cpo along rivers and
streams with adjacent rock pools or
rocky side channels. Up to 1800 ft.
BIRDS
U - Acorn Woodpecker:
{B}{Y} Central Valley and associated foothills
Oak and oak conifer mixed stands.

v - American White Pelican:
Passing visitor. Little Hyatt, Hyatt
and Howard Prairie. Large bodies of
water.
P - Barrows Goldeneye:
{W} No records of breeding but may
occur in Cascade Lakes.
U - Bank Swallow:
{B} Rogue River ..[S] of Shady Cove. Cut
banks over water.
C - Black-backed Woodpecker: Sightings throughout Jac Co.
Mixed conifers esp. with
lodgepole & ponderosa pine.
P - Bufflehead:
winter visitor only. Lakes, rivers, and ponds.
C - Burrowing Owl: Essentially extirpated.
C - Ferruginous hawk: Uncommon visitor.
C - Flammulated Owl: Sightings throughout [E] half of Jac Co.
Probably present in [W] half. Old growth
with ponderosa pine preferred.
U - Grasshopper Sparrow:
{B} Medford (1963), Eagle point
(1989). Open disturbed grassland.
{B}{Y} Records from pilot rock to fish
lake area. Mountain forests, open
fields/meadows.
v - Great Grey Owl:
v - Greater Sandhill Crane:
{B} Sightings around Butte Falls
and Rancheria Road. Grasslands,
marshes, lakes and rivers.
C - Lewis Woodpecker:
{B}{Y} Throughout Jac Co. foothill and
valley areas. Mixed hardwood/conifers
and riparian areas.
v - Bobolink:
{B} Ashland area. May be extirpated.
C - Northern Goshawk: {B}{Y} Throughout Jac Co. in mature and
old growth stands.
U - Northern Pygmy Owl: {B}{Y} Throughout Jac Co. Uses
hardwoods or conifers of all ages.
Likes edge.

C - Pileated Woodpecker:
{B}{Y} Throughout Jac Co. Breeds in
mature and old growth forests.
Winters in foothills and valley
forest edge.
V - Pygmy Nuthatch: {B}{Y} ESE] corner of Jac Co. Likes dense
canopy cover and open understory, i.e. old
growth.
C - Red-Necked Grebe: Rare visitor. Wetlands.
v - Snowy Egret:
Rare visitor. Wet meadows, marshes, canal banks,
ponds.
U - Streaked Horned Lark: {B} Central valley area,
agricultural, pasture. & grasslands.
P - Tricolored Blackbird: {B} Breeding colonies seen in the
Medford and Eagle Point areas.
Residential, wetlands, & meadows.
C - Three Toed Woodpecker: High elevation, mixed conifer
containing lodgepole pine.
v - Western Bluebird:
{B} Throughout Jac Co. up to 3500 ft. in
open areas with snags.
C - White Headed Woodpecker: {B} Throughout Jac Co. Old growth
stands, near edge.
U - Williamson's Sapsucker: {B} ESE] corner of Jac Co. Mixed
coniferous and lodgepole pine
forests.
T / T - Northern Spotted Owl:
Throughout Jac County. Old growth, mature
second growth.
E / E - Peregrine Falcon:
Two known nest in Jac County. Open country
with adjacent cliffs & large bodies of water.
E / E - Bald Eagle:
Ten known nest sites in Jac County. Lakes, Rivers.
Selects over mature trees with canopy for nest
trees.

C - American Marten:
In Cascades along [E) edge of Jac Co. Mature
and old growth mixed conifer stands, close to
open meadows.
C - Fisher:
Throughout Jac Co. In mature and old growth stands.
v - Fringed Myotis:
Known on the Siskiyou Nat Forest. Possibly in
other areas of Jac Co. Uses caves, buildings,
woodlands, grasslands.
v - Pallid Bat:
Throughout Jac Co. In arid, rocky areas near water.
U - Ringtail (Cat):
Throughout Jac Co. Except [E) edge (Cascades).
Likes coniferous forests, rocky terrain esp.
with tanoak.
C2 / C - Townsend's Big Eared Bat:
Throughout Jac Co. Uses caves,
buildings, under bridges, and mines.
C2 / U - White Footed Vole:
Throughout Jac Co. All types and ages of
forests up to 3500 ft.
