Each year, the month of May is set aside as a special time to pay
tribute to older Americans and to acknowledge their many
contributions to our lives. For the better part of this century,
through tough times and good times, these Americans have raised
families, strengthened our economy, defended our nation, and
reaffirmed our deepest values. All of us who are heirs to their
service and sacrifice, owe them a profound debt of gratitude; and
WHEREAS
The 1998 theme, "Living Longer, Growing Stronger in America,"
highlights the fact that many of us are living longer, fuller, more
satisfying lives and that we are growing stronger in the process.
Join Senior and Disability Services of the Rogue Valley Council of
Governments and the City of Ashland in paying tribute to older
Americans during the month of May and throughout the year for the
contributions they have made and continue to make to our city,
county, state and nation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, Oregon,
do hereby proclaim May, 1998, as:
OLDER AMERICANS' MONTH
in Ashland and urge all citizens to join in this Observance and Celebration and
continue that support and encouragement all year long.

PROCLAMATION
WHBREAS, h~stonc preservation is an effeclave tool for managing growth,

rev~tahmng neighborhoods, fostenng local pride, and maintainin~
commumty character while enhancing hvabfl~ty; and
WHEREAS, historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation,
both urban and rural, and for Americans of all ages, all walks of
life and all ethnic backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the
contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve
the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people;
and
WHEREAS, "Preservation Begins at Home" is the theme for National Historic
Preservation Week 1998 cosponsored by the Ashland Historic
Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do
hereby proclaim the week of May 10 - 16, 1998, as:
"NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK"
and call upon the people of Ashland to join their fellow citizens across the
United States in recognizing and participating in this special observance.

WHE~AS, the City of Ashland is wor~ng towed a transpotation system that
b~an~s different m~es; and
WHE~AS, the Transportion Plan~ng Rule h~ required Orego~ans to
r~uce vehicular miles traveled by 20 ~rcent in 30 ye~s; and
WHE~AS, 25% of ~l trips ~e one mile or less; and
WHEREAS, Ashland offers beautiful vistas for walking, bicycling, and other
alternative modes of transportation; and
WHEREAS, the opportunity to walk, bicycle, ride the bus and travel by
alternative modes of transportation e~ances Ashland's livability
and small-town character; and
WHEREAS,
walking and bicycling support our common values of community,
equity, clean air, safer streets and energy conservation; and
WHEREAS, events have been organized and promoted for Ashland Free Ride
Day by the City of Ashland Bicycle Commission.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do
hereby proclaim Friday, May 15, 1998, as:
"ASHI,AND FREE RIDE DAY"
and encourage all citizens to join in this observance.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS,
in 1960 President John F. Kennedy proclaimed that one week each year
would be set aside to recognize the accomplishments of Public Works
professionals; and
WHEREAS, this year marks the 104th anniversary of the Public Works profession;
and
WHEREAS, Public Works Services provided in our community are an integral part of
our citizens' everyday lives; and
the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the
efficient operation of Public Works systems and programs such as water,
sewers, streets, storm drains, equipment, the municipal airport, and
snow removal; and
WHEREAS, the health, safety, and comfort of this community greatly depends on
these facilities and services.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine M. Shaw, Mayor of Ashland, do hereby proclaim
the week of May 17 - 23, 1998, as:
NATIONAL PUBLIC WORKS WEEK
in Ashland, and I call upon all citizens and civic organizations to acquaint themselves
with the issues involved in providing our Public Works and the contributions which
Public Works officials make every day to our health, safety, and comfort.

PROCLAMATION
TO DESIGNATE THE WEEK OF MAY 17 - 23, 1998 AS
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK
WHEREAS, Emergency medical services are a vital public service; and
WHEREAS,
The members of emergency medical services are ready to provide lifesaving care
to those who experience sudden illness or injury; and
WHEREAS,
Access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival and
recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and
WHEREAS,
Emergency medical services providers have traditionally served as the safety net
of America's health care system; and
WHEREAS,
Emergency medical services consist of emergency physicians & nurses,
emergency medical technicians, paramedics, firefighters, educators,
administrators, and others; and
WHEREAS,
The members of emergency medical services teams, whether career or volunteer,
engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing education to
enhance their lifesaving skills; and
WHEREAS,
It is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of emergency
medical services providers by designating Emergency Medical Services Week;
and
WHEREAS,
Injury prevention and the appropriate use of the EMS system will help reduce
national health care costs; and
WHEREAS,
The members of Ashland Fire & Rescue are joined by other concerned citizens of
Ashland, as well as businesses, schools, service clubs, and organizations in their
emergency medical services efforts; and
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Catherine Shaw, Mayor of the City of Ashland, do hereby proclaim the
week of May 17 - 23. 1998, as:
NATIONAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK
and call upon the people of Ashland to celebrate the accomplishments of EMS providers, and to
remember, as the 1998 National Emergency Medical Services Week theme suggests:
"EMS: THE VITAL LINK"
