Notes:
John and Carole
My job is to help you help the committee
Communication between each other is critical. If not, the group will eventually sense it
and confidence levels in leadership drops.
Things to think about/watch for
Sub-committee assignments
Watch for different strengths to emerge that are suited to sub-committees
e.g. Michael is detail oriented which is good, but assigned to a sub-committee
with someone else who has the same strength can be a detriment. They could get stuck in
the minutia and not continue to move forward. Pair him with someone with different
strengths.
Be sure everyone is “up to speed” before moving on.
Be sure to call for discussion on the motion before the vote and be sure everyone
knows discussion is ending before calling for the vote
e.g. It appeared that Michael was not aware that a vote ended discussion. Be sure
everyone knows that the group is moving on before doing so.
Be sure everyone has the opportunity to speak before moving on.
e.g. Kate has yet to contribute to any discussion. She may just be shy, she may
not have anything to say, but more likely she might need encouragement.
Protocols:
?
At the beginning of public hearing. State the procedure.
?
If items on the agenda are open to public input, state that as well.
?
Save the last 10 minutes (or less) to re-cap the action items discussed during the
meeting so that everyone goes home knowing who is doing what. Re-state the
“homework” “be sure to review the materials from XYZ before the next
meeting”
