Dear Congressman Walden and Senators Wyden and Smith:
Thank you for your efforts to secure $2.6 million for funding for the expansion of the Clark R. Bavin Forensic Labora-
tory in AsWand. The work of the USFW forensic lab benefits not only Ashland and .oregon, but also all of the United
States and many foreign countries. Weare confident that the expansion will enable the lab to do even more good work
in solving crimes against wildlife. We would be happy to arrange a tour of the facility should you have the time when
you visit southern Oregon.
Ashland has a long history of cooperative community problem solving. Businesses, non-profits, schools and local gov-
ernment work closely together year round to achieve common goals. The Ashland United Front which includes the Ash-
land School District, the City of Ashland, Southern Oregon University, Community Works, the Rogue Valley Transit
District and the Ashland Chamber of Commerce have been meeting for many months to discuss the federal priorities of
our community. We begin by asking ourselves what are the critical issues facing our community and how can we help.
Collectively we agree that affordable housing, watershed management, transportation and our youth are the most impor-
tant and critical issues in our community. Without affordable housing we lose diversity, without proper watershed man-
agement we risk catastrophic fire and loss of water quality and quantity, without enhanced transportation we risk losing
our employees to other areas ofthe Rogue Valley and without physically and mentally healthy youth we risk losing our
future.
fucluded in this packet are our federal appropriation requests. Thank you in advance for your careful consideration of
our needs.
During the last session, we had the pleasure of working closely with your staff. Congratulations on having employees,
who are attentive, patient, compassionate, knowledgeable and responsive. They represent you well both in Oregonapd
in Washington DC. Thank you and yourUfor your s on behalf of AsWand and Oregon.
