RESOLUTION NO. 91-29
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING CONCERN TO THE SECRETARY OF STATE OF THE STATE
OF OREGON IN REFERENCE TO ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW POLI,]~ICAL DISTRICT
BOUNDARIES.
WHEREAS, the Secretary of State of the State of Oregon has. been directed
to establish new political district boundaries and,
WHEREAS, the City Council and the citizens of Ashland havE! concerns that
proposed new political district boundaries may split the city of Ashland
into two separate districts or isolate the City of Ashland
representation outside of the Rogue Valley,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and City Councdl of the City
of Ashland, Oregon as follows:
SECTION 1. That the Secretary of State consider the following factors
in relation to the City of Ashland and any proposed political district
realignment:
A. The City of Ashland is a city of approximately 17,000 citizens who
would suffer from a split representation if a politicial district
boundary divided the city. The City of Ashland is a cohesive and
independent city which does not wish to be divided in its
representation.
B. The City of Ashland is located in the Rogue Valley. The Rogue
Valley has a unique "personality" and representation for the City
of Ashland from outside the Rogue Valley would tend to isolate the
City of Ashland from local perspective and representation.
SECTION 2. The City Council and the citizens of the City of Ashland
urge the Secretary of State to not consider any poli1:ical district
realignment which would physically split the City of Ashland or isolate
the City of Ashland from representation from within the Rogue Valley.
The foregoing Resolution was READ and DULY ADOPTED at a regular meeting
of the City Council of the City of Ashland, Oregon on the 16th day of
Julv, 1991.
