ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION
MINUTES
MARCH 28,1996
I. Meeting called to order at approximately 7: 1 0 p.m.
Present:
Vince James (Chair)
Mark Jenne (Minutes)

II. Approval of Minutes - March minutes approved.
III.
Guests:
No Guests
IV. Old Business:
A. Arboretum Status - No report.
B. Goals and Vision Planning - Item postponed until May meeting.
C. "Big Street Trees" list - No update
D. Riparian Area Protection/Enhancement - McClendon attended the hillside
development seminar and found people interested in restoring the creek that
currently runs under the SOSC campus. This issue is being investigated.
E. Trees for Siskiyou Boulevard - The trees were planted.
F. Arbor Week Planning -
1. Jenne reports that sasc is not available, so the Pete Seda talk is
out.
2. Trees for newborns - it was decided that a certificate would go
with the package that is distributed to new mothers. The Commission
and Parks Department will handle the logistics.

3. McClendon reports that the Mayor is scheduled for the ceremony
at Laurel and Almond Monday, April 8th at 4:00.
4. Whitall's tree planting at the Natural History Museum is on for
Tuesday at 12:30. McClendon says the museum is also giving away
trees on Monday.
5. The Wednesday 3:00 Lithia Park walk will be sponsored by the
museum.
6. Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Vern Crawford will give slide show and
song on trees of the northwest.
7. Saturday at 10:00 a.m. is another Lithia Park walk sponsored by
the museum.
8. James, who has coordinated Arbor Week this year, expressed his
deep appreciation of all the work Nancy Slocum, Planning
Department, has done to support Arbor Week.
9. James will get Whitall to collect tree of the year ballots from
Planning Department, then announce the winner at the ceremony
Monday.
10. Simmons will attempt to get a paragraph in the Tidings'
Community Section reminding people to vote for Tree-of-the-Year,
ballot for which appeared in last week's Revels.
V. New Business:
A, Site Review -
1, PA 96-045 (Lot 9 on Benson Way) - Plan looks good, lots of
trees. In fact, some thinning may be required as trees mature.
2. PA 96-046 (2565 Siskiyou Blvd.) - Need plan to list species
for street trees: select for suitability under overhead wires.

3. PA 96-049 (1060 Benson Way) - Please consider using
larger stature trees in parking lot area.
4. PA 96-047 (1452 Oregon St.) - Commission appreciates the
efforts to keep existing trees and applicant's wish to protect
them during construction.
B. Commission Attendance - those present briefly discussed the
problem of attendance and how to ensure a quorum.
C. Shelly Simmons announced that this was her last Tree
Commission meeting and regretfully resigned.
