ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION
MINUTES
MARCH 7,1996
I. Meeting called to order at approximately 7:10p.m.

II. Approval of Minutes - February minutes approved.
III.
Guests:

IV. Old Business:
A. Arboretum Status - No report.
B. Goals and Vision Planning - Item postponed until after Arbor Week.
C. "Big Street Trees" list - No update
D. Ashland Riparian Area Protection - John McClendon brought in a map of
the riparian areas of interest to him. Rich will give John a contact person for
a group that wants to free up Hamilton & Roca creeks (run them above
ground again). John will contact Richard Hart and/or others. He will think
about a possible riparian area protection ordinance to discuss next month
and would like to see a riparian tree list. (As an example, the city of Phoenix
has protected 25 feet on each side of its streams.)
E. Trees for Siskiyou Boulevard - Donn Todt's note indicates that the trees
will be planted at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13th. Commissioners to
meet at Blue Mountain Cafe.
F. Arbor Week Planning -
1. Mark still needs to invite Pete Sed a to give his talk.

2. SOSC has science seminar 3:00 Fridays and will try to fit Arbor
Week into their schedule.
3. John McClendon will contact the Mayor for proclamation and kick-
off (tentatively Monday April 8) celebration. Donn Todt says the
1995 plaque is ready for the ceremony.
4. Nancy Kerr will try to coincide the Tree-to-Newborn Baby
giveaway with Arbor Week (maybe Thursday?).
5. Rich has 1 st and 2nd grade classes that want to plant a tree at the
museum perhaps Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon (12:30-1 :00).
Donn will probably locate the tree for us to use. Shelly to coordinate
with the press and Rich will talk to museum and school.
6. Wednesday at 3:00 and Saturday at 10:00 are Lithia Park walks
given by someone from the museum. Tom Foster (482-5837) is the
contact.
7. Nancy Kerr and/or Shelly may work something out with the
Northwest Nature Shop.
8. Vince will call David Mason and ask him to write an article.
9. Commission will move April's Tree Commission meeting to March
28th to allow more planning time for Arbor Week.
V. New Business:
A. Site Review -
1. PA 96-035 (1149 Siskiyou) - 20% landscaping shown on
plan appear exaggerated. Commission suggests adding one
street tree and saving the driveway Birch. Also, applicant
needs to add turf blocks around the parking lot plum tree.

2. PA 96-008 (N Mountain @ Hersey) - The developer needs to
work with the city to save the large oak trees. Commission
wands to review a landscape plan.
3. PA 96-020 (284 Hersey Street) - Commission suggests that
larger stature trees be used on Hersey instead of plums.
4. PA 96-033 (Siskiyou @ Mary Jane) - Some street tree oaks
shown are not listed in the Recommended Street Tree List.
They may work, but applicant should have landscaper Sish
verify their suitability.
B. Friends of Ashland is coordinating a pair of meetings (Monday,
March 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 16 from 9:00 - 12 noon)
to discuss hillside development. Call Mark, Donn or John for details.
C. The Saturday, March 2, the tree planting in the city fuel break (top
of Park Street) went well thanks to the 4H Club kids and parents.
Mark Jenne represented the Tree Commission and six hundred
Ponderosa Pines were planted.
D. Rich Whitall and Vince James found some interesting switched
under the table they were sitting at. Shortly after their play session
the Ashland Police arrived to investigate the "emergency."
E. The commission voted anonymously to move the April meeting up
to March 28 and to cancel the July 4, 1996 meeting due to the
summer holiday.
