by volunteers and include geographYr vegetation, etc. Donn recommends
Plato Doundoulakis from Atlas Environmental, who works on stream and
wetland restoration, as a resource.
E. Trees for Newborns - The commission came up with some suggestions
for this program including: limiting tree pickup to three times each year
(maybe Octoberr January and March) and keeping expenses down perhaps
by soliciting local nurseries for seedling donations and in turn providing them
publicity on the voucher form.

2. PA 96-072 (Eureka St.} - Commission suggested replacing
dogwoods in parking lot with one tree, perhaps a Goldenrain.
3. PA 96-075 (Briscoe School} - Commission felt the overall
plan looked good. Suggested applicant may want closer
spacing on Kinnickinnick. Also stated that the bare area
between sidewalk & Manzanita Street could use shade tolerant
ground cover and thought a larger Pyrus would survive better
and suggested a 2 1/2" caliper.
B. Selection of Tree Commission Secretary - Decided to postpone
action until August. The only real secretarial duty is to take minutes
at the commission meeting and then delivering them to the Planning
Department shortly thereafter, Mark suggests that pen & paper be
put in the commission box each month to assist with the transition.
C. Site Review for July - Donn Todt will review landscape plans for
July as the Commission will not meet that month.
D. Use of herbicide "Spike" along irrigation ditches - The Talent
Irrigation District has just completed a three year program of spraying
to control puncturevine. Donn Todt reported that the use of the
herbicide does a lot of damage to nearby vegetation, especially woody
plants. Donn Todt reported that Ashland resident Nan Hannon has
filed an official complaint regarding this. The commission or the city
may want to keep an eye on the ditches in Ashland for chemical
damage.
E. Mark Jenne's last meeting - Mark has delivered his notes on the
tree inventory and on various tree ordinances around the west to
Nancy Slocum in the Planning Department. He also gave a quick
tutorial of the tree inventory software to those present.
F. Commission welcomed Jack Goldberg as the newest Tree
Commissioner. Jack owns Valley View Nursery.
VI. Meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
