Meeting called to order at 7:20 p.m. Present Rich Whitall (Chair) John McClendon (Minutes) Nancy Kerr Shelly Simmons Vince James II. Approval of Minutes - March minutes approved. III. Guests: No guests IV. Old Business: A. Trees around Power Lines - Project complete: see March 9 minutes. B. Update of Recommended Street Tree List - No report. C. Arboretum Status - No report. D. Roadway View Clearance - No report. E. Black Oak Planting Project - Rich reported that more trees have been planted and still more requests received. F. Arbor Week Planning - Nancy Kerr gave a detailed outline of the events next week. (See attached agenda.) We are getting 1200 seedling trees from BLM to give away to elementary school children and many others. A set of posters were made by the city and passed out for members to post. Monday's event is set. Tuesday Shelly and Rich will take 110 trees to Ashland Middle School and pick up the coloring contest winning pictures. These will be hung in Pioneer Hall on Wednesday and Thursday. Lectures are organized. Saturday's tours will be led by Donn Todt and Nancy Kerr. Several commission members will attend and/or supervise the different events. 1 ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 4,1995 New Business: A. Site Review - PA 95-035. No obvious objections. Mark and Rich will fill out the Site Review form and return to Planning Department. B. Highway 66 Planning - Carried forward to next month. C. Goal Setting - Carried forward to next month. D. Tree Inventory Software Tutorial Offer - Carried to next month. E. Ballot Counting for 1995 Tree-of-the-Year - The Oak on North Laurel won overwhelmingly. Meeting called to order at 7:20 p.m. Present: David Mason (Chair) Mark Jenne (Minutes) Nancy Kerr Shelly Simmons Vince James Oonn Todt II. Approval of Minutes - April minutes approved with date correction. III. Guests: Michael Doyle (PA 95-020, 280 Palm St.) Ken Hagen (Main Street Widening) IV. Old Business: A. Update of Recommended Street Tree List - Designer has had family health problems. Donn will talk with her. B. Arboretum Status - A meeting with the entire Billings family is scheduled for July 4. C. Roadway View Clearance Issue - No report. D. Black Oak Planting Project - It was a lot of fun and a big success. The 40 or so trees that were planted appear to be establishing themselves nicely. Donn Todt says Parks Department is keeping the remaining seedlings for next year. E. Arbor Week Review - A big thanks to Nancy Kerr and everyone involved. The Monday ceremony at SOSC was especially well run, well attended and successful overall. The publicity for free trees was also good. The coloring contest fell through at the last minute. Attendance for other events were small, but enthusiastic. 1 ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES MAY 4,1995 F. Highway 66 Planning - Mark discussed the pedestrian, bicycle, planning and commercial interest goals and how they might conflict with each other. (Note: after the meeting Ken Hagen mentioned that the group is polarizing between "median" and "no median" camps.) V. New Business: A. Site Review - 1. PA 95~039 - No comment. 2. PA 95-020 (280 Palm) - Plan looks good. A few suggestions were offered to guest Michael Doyle. 3. PA 95-042 (Tolman Creek & Siskiyou) - No comment. 4. PA 95-014 (930 Tolman Creek) - Looks good. 5. PA 95-044 (955 B St.) - The plan is preliminary, but questions raised were: Is adequate screening planned for B Street neighbors? What is planned for back "yards"? Is landscaping really 30+%? Commission suggests screening for B Street neighbors and that applicant supply completed landscape plans that can be easily reviewed. B. Goal Setting - Various goals for the Tree Commission's next 1 - 5 years were brought up. Commission will discuss in depth next month: tree planting projects, compliance assurance methods and ordinance revisions. C. Tree Inventory Tutorial - Mark offered to demonstrate tree inventory software and database. Mark will research a good time/place for demo and be ready to make an offer next month. D. After the meeting, Ken Hagen suggested that this is a good time to approach ODOT about landscaping along North Main for the widening project. This will be placed on the agenda next month. VI.
