Meeting called to order at approximately 7: 10 p.m. Present: Vince James David Jacquat Mark Jenne (Minutes) John McClendon Rich Whitall (Chair) Donn Todt II. Approval of Minutes - Minutes approved with the addition of Rich Whitall as chair. III. Guests: None present IV. Old Business: A. Update of Recommended Street Tree List - The last few comments were made so Donn will get the "brochure" finalized. Some last-minute ideas, such as a summary table, will be looked into for at a later update. B. Arboretum Status - No update as David Mason was absent. David Jacquat brought in a case study of the Chicago Arboretum development as an example for Dave Mason. C. Tree Commission Goals and Vision Planning - Rich has gotten surveys from the six commissioners in attendance. He will organize the results for discussion next month. Several priorities were discussed. D. Tree Inventory Tutorial Status - Mark spoke with Nancy Slocum again about her lack of success in running the computer program. Mark then demonstrated the problem for Computer Systems Manager Phil Lind. Phil had a few possible solutions. He asked us to wait until mid December when the hard disk space is increased and then try again. If that doesn't work, he may have to bypass the network somehow. The program has been so troublesome that Mark is now considering removing the data and using it with another program which would have the additional benefit of combining the three pieces of the inventory into one ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES DECEMBER 7, 1995 program. One especially promising possibility is to combine the tree inventory with the Planning Department's upcoming geographic information system/computer mapping effort. E. Big Street Tree List - David Jacquat has come up with a draft list that contains site considerations, species list, etc. Comments were made and discussed. Donn will work with David to refine this list. The hope is that someday big trees will be strongly encouraged in suitable sites. F. Riparian Area Protection - John McClendon has gone over the Fish and Wildlife Service wetlands map provided by Bill Molnar. John would like to investigate the few dozen wetlands shown in the city a locate them on a more-detailed map. There was a general agreement that we would narrow our concern to riparian corridors (eliminating marshy meadows). Further focussing was discussed. John will look at the areas identified on the map to identify possible problems/actions. Also, the new North Mountain Avenue/Bear Creek park is an existing riparian area whose future is being decided now and over the next year or so. Those who wish to comment on the plans should do so soon. G. Trees for Siskiyou Boulevard - A form has been created to ask Siskiyou residents if they want one of the five large hybrid maples purchased for that purpose. The forms will probably be handed out to residents by Donn tomorrow with the idea of planting in January '96 :t a couple weeks. Donn will discuss timing at the next meeting, or call all commissioners if planting can happen earlier. V. New Business: A. Site Review - Commission concurred with the review comments written for P.A.'s 95-133,95-132,95-131 and 95-136. B. Arbor Day Planning - Vince James will coordinate Arbor Day Planning this year. This month he will work with Nancy Slocum to get the utility mailing together and out. VI. Meeting adjourned. 2
