Attenders: Leslie Van Gelder Mark Jenne (Minutes) Donn T odt John McClendon Susan Hunt (Chair) David Mason II. Approval of Minutes - December minutes approved, no quorum in January III. Guests: Pete Seda, Mark Gaddis, John Stahmer (93-020), George Hutchinson IV. Old Business A. Street Tree Inventory Progress - No progress. B. Tree. Line USA Training Status - Leslie will get with Nancy to order the vid~o. (Video ordered 2/18/94.) C. Cypress at Briscoe School - The sidewalk has been cut back from the tree. David Mason will finish up by adding dirt. The plaque attached to the tree will be swallowed soon if it is not moved or removed. Commission voted to reimburse David Mason for his expense of approximately $150. D. Tree Planting in the Watershed - Mark went to the Forest Commission meeting and arranged some places for planting. He also consulted with Jeff, Parks Department, who pointed out planting sites. Donn confirmed with Jerry Glossop that both quarry and below the new water reservoir are approved for planting. Date will be March 14th, Monday, so school kids can be involved. He will need trees and organizing help. E. Arbor Week Planning - 1. Tree planting across from Briscoe - Mark drew up a plan of the triangular site, but left it at home. Leslie talked to the principal of Briscoe, who recommended involving the long-time crossing guard ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 3, 1~\S\C\~ and the students who cross there. According to Donn, Brian Almquist would like to see this area beautified with more than just a tree. Donn and Mark will draw up a general landscape plan for Brian's review. Donn has a hybrid maple with red fall color that would look good at that site. Planting has been scheduled for 2:15 p.m., Monday, April 4. Leslie will contact the principal and Mayor Golden to make arrangements. 2. Susan will attempt to get a riparian expert to give a tree and plant walk along Ashland Creek (perhaps Saturday, April 9). 3. Donn Todt reports the plaque for last year's Tree of the Year has been ordered. F. Fourth of July Parade - Postponed. V. New Business: A. Site Review - 1. PA 93-020 (Rogue Environmental Inc.) - Commission recommends that four trees be planted along Fourth Street. Trees should be large stature and planted as soon as possible., (Recommendation approved as written.) 2. PA 93~023 (Tim Richards) ~ Commission voted to accept the Site Review as written. B. Donn mentioned a Forestry Education Program that had been brought to his attention. Susan Hunt will look at the information packet Donn brought and report back next month. C. Mark Jenne was selected as the new liaison to the Forestry Commission as Susan Hunt resigned that position. D. George Hutchinson came by to commend Dave Mason for the great guest editorial that appeared in tonight's paper. Dave recommended an arboretum or botanical garden on the Billing's site (now proposed for a city golf course). 2 ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 3, ~\~ C'~\..\ E. Mark Gaddis asked if the Mulberry trees in the parkrow at 188 Garfield (Christian Center) can be removed and replaced with a more suitable tree. David Mason will me.et him at the site and sign the Tree Permit. F. Leslie said she may have to resign because she might be joining the Peace Corps effective after July 4th. VI.
