Leslie van Gelder David Cyphers Donn Todt Mark Jenne (Minutes) Doug Hormel Pete Sada David Chasmar Susan Hunt (Chair) II. Approval of Minutes - January Minutes approved with changes III. Guests: Jonathan Landes Peter Kelling Mike Oxman (Grants Pass Tree Commission) Serena Lindy IV. Old Business: A. Arbor Week: 1. Donn indicated that ornamental pears will be planted in the park in conjunction with the school. 2. Leslie will interview Pete in the next couple of weeks and will try to have it published in the Ashland Gazette. 3. Donn could put on a slide show of urban Ashland trees in the Community Center (on Winburn). Chas would publicize this event. 4. Chas stated that the Tree of the Year ballot will be in the upcoming utility bill. 5. Donn says Linda Ryan will give tree walk. 6. Pete has located trees (approximately 3000) plus Buck Brush and Deer Brush. He has also found several sites for tree planting on February 28th. Chas will publicize this event. 7. Pete has a technical slide show (by SLlGO) and has been working on an educational tree video. . ASHLAND STREET TREE COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 4, 1993 8. Susan says Ray's Nursery (Ken) will donate a tree for our use if we make an official written request. 9. Doug volunteered to gather ideas for landscaping awards. 10. Tentative Schedule: > Sunday, February 28: Pete's tree planting Monday, April 5, noon: ceremony in Gartield Park, plant tree, announce 1993 Tree of the Year, Mayor's proclamation, Tree City USA award received Tuesday, April 6, time TBA: get with owners, Rick Landt (nominator) and Daily Tidings to place 1992 Tree of the Year plaque at 133 Nutley Street Wednesday, April 7 (or some other evening), 7:00: Donn Todt will give slide show in a place to be scheduled Saturday, April 10, at 10:00(?): Linda Ryan's historic tree walk near Granite, High Street and Alice Peil Walkway B. Street Tree Inventory - Donn reports that progress has resumed. C. Tree Ordinance Subcommittee - David Cyphers brought proposed revisions for inclusion in next month's packet. D. Brian Almquist and Cable Company Tree Trimming - Doug reports that Brian Almquist has received only a handful of complaints about cable company tree butchers. He referred complaints to the cable company, which he thinks were taken care of. Project is 95% complete. In the future we need to get this kind of thing written into contracts. Doug will ask Brian what guidelines were supposed to have been followed. NAA pruning standards would be nice, says Mike Oxman. Leslie wants to write a letter (for review at next month's meeting) to Brian expressing our dissatisfaction with the cable company and requesting that, in the future, NAA pruning standards be followed. Pete will work with Leslie on drafting this letter. Chas notes that the trenchers were very careless and all responsible parties tried to pass the buck. Susan and Leslie will also write a comment column for the newspaper. Commission authorized Pete to buy the NAA standards and will reimburse him. Other standards to consider are ANSI and OSHA. 2 ASHLAND STREET TREE COMMISSION MINUTES FEBRUARY 4, 1993 E. Brian Almquist and Utility Worker Training - Brian would like a letter from us requesting that city utility workers go through the Tree Line USA training. There is a video, "Powerful Problems, Growing Solutions" available also. Chase will write a draft letter for this. Brian seems supportive and would also like to plant along Lithia Way. Chas will have to approach the Elks regarding this. V. New Business A. Plans for 170 S. Mountain presented by Jonathan Landes - conceptual approval was given, but it needs more detail on irrigation. Plan looks well thought-out. B. Susan Hunt will clarify April meeting date (1st or 8th). C. Site visit at 2300 Siskiyou Boulevard (XEL Ltd. - PA 92-132) - Chas, with realtor and Mr. Anderson and pointed out trees that could be saved. Planning Commission held up plan based on our objections, therefore, developer will have to resubmit. D. Bulldozer carelessness along the road to the reservoir - Susan and Pete will draft a letter suggesting guidelines for Public Works trimming trees in undeveloped areas. F. Center for Urban Forestry has a conference in Seattle whereby commission voted to reimburse Pete Sada for his registration fee (approximately $150). Pete will get with Nancy to get a check cut. G. Nancy was asked to make sure our account balance reflects the $297 credit for the purchase of Tree Inventory software. The amount to come from the Tree Inventory Grant. VI. Meeting adjourned at 9:05 3
