HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-1104 Tree MIN ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 4, 1993 I. Meeting called to order. Attenders: Leslie Van Gelder Mark Jenne (Minutes) Donn Todt John McClendon Susan Hunt (Chair) Doug Hormel II. Approval of Minutes - September and October minutes approved with minor corrections. III. Guests: Tom Frantz (PA 93-119) IV. Old Business A. Street Tree Inventory - Software disks were organized and sent to Davie Tree Co. for repair and organizing. The cost should be $300 or less, an expense which was approved at the last meeting. Mark will continue to coordinate this. B. Tree Line USA/Utility Pruner Training - Donn said AI Williams was receptive. Leslie is obtaining material from the National Arbor Day Society to give to AI. e. Cypress at Briscoe School - The sidewalk has not been cut back. David Mason absent, so there was no update. D. Review of Recommended Street Tree List - Donn suggested condensing and editing a 5-6 page handout which would be available free at the Planning Department. Donn will bring a draft handout to the next meeting. The Recommended Street Tree List could be updated after this handout is completed. E. Review of Goals - Accomplished. F. Water Conservation at sose - Susan will contact Dennis Johnson to find out status of updpting the sasc irrigation system and get an idea of their position/problems. ASHLAND TREE COMMISSION MINUTES NOVEMBER 4, 1993 G. Tree Planting in the Watershed - Mark talked to Pete Sada and will assist with this. It will be similar to last year. H. Arbor Week Planning - I. John McClendon will coordinate the Tree-of-the-Year. He'll get with Nancy to review last year's utility flyer, etc. 2. Tree planting activities should involve students. We brainstormed possible locations. Donn will check out irrigation near Briscoe School. All of us will look for possible sites, which should be at a school or a very public location. . 3. Susan will ask riparian expert, Richard Hart, if he will give a short tour. v. New Business: A. Site Review - 1. PA 93-119 (233 Fourth Street/Tom Frantz) - Refer to Site Review Comment Sheet. Commission felt the need for a parking shade tree and to name the pear variety (maybe change to Raywood Ash). 8. City Contractors using Spurs - There have been several complaints about contractors who have done pruning work in the East Main Cemetery and other places using spurs to climb the trees. Types of trees that do not repair holes quickly, such as Oaks, can be weakened by this method. Mark will get a pamphlet and advice from Donn Todt, then send a letter to Mike Biondi about this problem and pruning standards in general. VI. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m. 2
