The fire was in the downstairs unit shown in this picture. The fire sprinkler system activated, controlling the fire before firefighters arrived. This fire dis- placed only one family, and the repairs were ac- complished in just a few weeks, allowing the dis- placed family to retum to their home quickly. Few of their belongings were damaged or destroyed. I Fire Sprinkler Activations-Ashland, Oregon Fire in Multi-family Housing with NO Fire Sprinklers This fire was caused by unattended cooking. The tenant left oil cooking on the stove after removing the french fries and taking them next door. The fire, while it did not bum long, displaced the tenant and caused smoke damage to most of their personal belongings. The fire caused significant damage to the cabinets and cooking appliances. The fire was just beginning to penetrate the ceiling when the fire department arrived. The heat was hot enough throughout the unit that the upper half of the vertical blinds were warped. Fire Sprinkler Activations-Ashland, Oregon Page 3 _ Fire in Multi-family housing with Fire Sprinkler Activation-2009 A fire started in the Southem Oregon University Family Housing on Quincy. This unit was in the middle of multi-family two-story complex. Each unit had two fioors. The fire was caused by a candle that had been left burning approximately 24 hours earlier. The resident had left town the previous aftemoon. The fire sprinkler system controlled the fire, requiring displacement of only this tenant. While water damage occurred to this unit and the adjacent units, the dam- age was far less that the smoke and char that would have occurred if the fire had continued to bum while the fire department was enroute, nollo mention the thousand gallons of water lhat may have been used to suppress the fire. I There was no lack of ignition sources in this unit, or in many others to which we continue to pro- vide fire response. Ashland Fire & Rescue SFR Fires with no Fire Sprinkler System SFR with fire that started at an air exchange unit in a mechanical room. The fire smoldered in the mechani- cal room for many hours before a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from the eaves. The fire caused about 3 inches of char to a main, structural member. Smoke traveled throughout the home and into the attic with limited charring in the attic. ~.. The soot layer throughout . the house was so thick you . D . could see every footprint on the floor. At last report, structural engineering would be re- quired, and even the eco wood floors would need to be replaced. The fire department used less than 40 gal Ions of water on this fire.
