1968-69 B~GET HEARING
June 27, 1968
The Common Council of the city of Ashland met, in adjourned session at
7:3Q,P.M. this date. Cou~cilmenBaker, Cottle, Jones and Ward were
present. Mayor Neill and Councilmen Roberts and Whitham were absent.
Councilman, Jones preside4.
Purpose of meeting being Public Hearing for amended proposed 1968-69
ci ty Budget. .
Members of Citizens Budget Committee present were: Floyd Vogel, Lyle
Knower 0 and Joe: Butler.
Acting Mayor Jones requested that Mr. Lyle Knower act as pro-tern
Chairman of Budget Committee due to the absence of. Chairman. Don Lewis.
Following the reading of the Budget Message by Mr. Knower, comments
were requested from the citizens in attendance.
Mr. William E. Camp, 715 Pracht Street, ,stated that he felt. that too
much money was being spent on Siskiyou Boulevard and the Plaza Area
rather than on. maintaining residential streets and that speed of traffic
on Siskiyou. Boulevard had increased greatly since said improvements.
(at this time, Chairman Lewis arrived}. Mr. Camp also felt.that cuts
in Budget, should be made in Coordinator's DepartIJIent rather than in
the Police, Fire and Street,.Departments.
Mr. Richard Refan, 240 Van Ness, Complained of bad conditions of Van Ness
Avenue and felt that more money should be allocated for maintenance of
streets rather than to other departments. Mr. H. Tom Lafferty, 303 Palm,
complained of the narrowness of Palm Avenue below Siskiyou Boulevard and
the parking congestion,of Palm Avenue, since parking had been,abolished
on Siskiyou Bouleyard.. Mr. Lafferty also felt that water and. sewer
rates were too high\
. "
During and following the comments of the citizens, all,members of the
Council expressed their views and reasons for the actions on the amended
1968-69 Budget as presented.
Upon resumption of regular business, it was moved by Baker, seconded by
Ward that the report of the Budget Committee be accepted.' On roll call
carried unanimously.
City Recorder Bartelt read the Ordinance adopting the Annual Budget for
Year.1968-69 and it was moved by Baker, seconded by Ward that the rules
be suspended and the Ordinance passed to second'reading by title only.
On roll call, carried 3~1 Jones dissenting.
Following second reading by Recorder Bartelt, it was moved by Ward,
that the Ordinance be adopted. At this time, Councilman Cottle re-
quested that final passage be deferred unti~ the Council Meeting of

July 2, 1968, in hopes that a,full, Council will be present. At this
point, Councilman Ward withdrew his motion.
'J:'here being'no further,business, it was moved by Baker, seconded by
Ward that therneeting be adjourned subject to the call of the Mayor.
