Karin Onkka • 125 Wimer St. • Ashland, Oregon 97520 • 541/482-9232 • kodesign®juno.com
In designing interpretive panels for the Ashland Forest Resiliency project, I will be drawing upon my years of formal
education and professional experience in the fields of graphic design and environmental education.Within each of my
employment positions, I feel I have honed specialized skills that allow me to design effective.interpretation for a variety
of ages, perspectives, and learning styles. Interpreting the natural history of the Ashland Watershed requires knowledge
of local ecosystems. I possess this background in addition to the writing and editing skills it takes to simplify complex
information and present it in a way so that visitors can appreciate the uniqueness of our local surroundings.
As a graduate student in the Environmental Education program at Southern Oregon University, my course load was
unique compared to similar programs across the country in that it focused heavily on local natural history. Frequent field
trips throughout our bioregion allowed me the opportunity to learn about local mammals, birds, invertebrates, reptiles,
amphibians, plants, geology, forest practices and ecosystems first-hand. I also completed courses in curriculum
development, interpretative practices, environmental law, and environmental journalism. I even designed a course in
environmental literature working alongside a professor in the English Department. In addition, 1 interned with North
Mountain Park as an interpretive consultant and with Wildlife Images assisting the staff in rehabilitating injured wildlife
and providing educational programs for young people.
In addition to working for large and small companies, I have spent many years as a self-employed graphic designer and
found I have never had to advertise; my client base has been built through referrals from satisfied customers. I have com-
pleted a number of interpretive sign projects in and around Ashland. Locally, my work can be seen at Lithia Park, North
Mountain Park, Briscoe Geology Park, Walker School, and on the fire interpretive trail in the Ashland Watershed.Around
the valley, I have designed interpretive signage for Abraham Lincoln Elementary, Siskiyou Field Institute, the US Forest
Service and the Bureau of Land Management. The latter two projects involved interpreting the Eight Dollar Mountain
area. I am currently designing interpretive signs for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.Through these varied work
experiences, I know what it takes to assess a project, maintain working relationships, create winning designs, meet
deadlines, honor organizational structures, manage contracts, stay on budget and keep clients happy. It has been my
experience that my past clients have been satisfied with the quality of my work and my adherence to deadlines, budgets
and contractual details.
In the past several years, I have developed a number of professional relationships with local printers, regional artists, and
a sign manufacturer in Santa Rosa, California. I intend to utilize these resources in completing the work for the Ashland
Forest Resiliency project.
I will charge$45.00/hour and will not exceed a grand total of$6,000.00 to edit and design the signs and to properly prepare
the files to send to the fabricator. Given the overall budget of$15,000,'this provides an adequate allowance for the sign
fabrication, frames/stands and illustrative/photographic artwork based on preliminary quotes I have received.
